Those with kids around 2 years old

How often does your child make noise during the night?

I'm starting to wonder if DD has night terrors or something. For the last month or so, she'll cry out in her sleep for a few seconds, then go back to sleep. It will be a cry, or sometimes it will be her saying a few words (scared words, like "no, get down" or "stop it!"). It breaks my heart to hear every time.

Lately it happens at least once a night, often 2 times a night. Usually happens during naps too. Nothing traumatic has ever happened to her (thankfully), besides a medical procedure when she was 15 months old, but I can't imagine she remembers that. Seriously, NOTHING else has traumatized her...no injuries, no new things happening in her life, nothing.

Kaydyn does this about 4-5 times a week. In the middle of the night she will just wake up screaming bloody murder. She generally quiets down after a minute or two and goes back to sleep. One night she did it 4 times so at 5am I went in and rubbed her back and gave her a little milk. I feel so bad.

C--Gracie started this right around her 2nd birthday; she's still doing it some nights saying "No" or "Mommy" or "Go" or something like that. It was usually once a night; sometimes 2x.

Kaitlynn has just recently started that - she wakes up with "NO" or "OWW"

Re: Those with kids around 2 years old

Both my kids have always done this. When they weren't talking they would wake crying for a minute or 2 and go back to sleep.

Since Hannah started talking it is exactly as you described. She does it frequently - I'd say most nights/naps at least once or twice. I did speak to my ped about it and he said it was normal.

Their little minds are always going. I think something so simple as another child taking their toy away or mommy paying attention to a friend can cause this. To THEM those simple acts can be upsetting. Its a part of growing and learning. It also breaks my heart, but I don't think there's much you can do except continue to show them love and comfort during the waking hours when little things that upset them happen.

We had one issue with a little boy being very mean to Hannah in daycare and she never said anything, but it came out at night. Those episodes were much worse than what goes on more regularly. I started questioning her when I noticed she was having these "nightmares" (not night terrors.) She would scream and yell at someone often to the point where I'd have to go in an calm her down. She wouldn't go back to sleep. It was really affecting her nighttime sleep. Once we figured out what was going on and got it resolved it took some time before she started sleeping more soundly.

My point is if there was something really bothering her, she wouldn't go back to sleep on her own and you would start to notice the lack of good sleep at night. (Crankiness, circles under her eyes, etc.)

I hope that helps!!!Chat Icon

0-2 times a night-some nights are quiet, other nights she wakes up for a few seconds with cries.

I thought all kids were this way-then we went on vacation with my brother and his family. When they heard DD they were surprised because their 2 year old sleeps much more soundly.

Noah does this maybe 2-3 times a week at night. Usually its laughing, but other times its a cry like almost from pain or a whimper. It is sad to hear, I agree.
