Re: Thought it deserved it's own thread - Creating "new" breeds debate - very long. Something new for us to fight over
My objection is not the creating of new breeds. That is how we have the breeds we have today. My objection is that the breeders (with the exception of the Cockerpoo, which is close to being a recognized breed) misrepresent the research and testing on most "new" dogs, which is next to none. My second objection is that they are trying to profit off of a fad, and NOT breeding within the standards to have the breed recognized. Furthermore, they are breeding dogs in an irresponsible manner to try and create demand.
Finally, taking 2 unapproved dogs (AKC or not) and breeding them to create a "good litter" of a new breed is NOT reputable, no matter what colour you paint it, what label you give it, or how much you WANT it to be reputable. It just plain isn't.
The guidelines are there for a reason, and if the breeders really want a new breed recognized they would eat, sleep and breathe these guidelines to be able to legitimize their "new"breed.

Responsible breeders do not cross breed...I have taken 3 puggles off the street as strays in the past 6 months....all abandoned.

I have nothing against creating a new breed, that's how we came up with all the different breeds. But I don't like the idea of amature breeders trying this. This should be done by proffesionals in a responsible way.
Also one of the things that bothers me with some of the breeds that have been created (and I am talking about ones that have been around a while) are the health problems that they have. Why would you create a breed of dog that has so many health problems?

I know the topic is about crossbreeds/mutts, but I just wanted to add in that those, as I am sure you know, arent the only type of dog that is abandoned. Just because you have seen 3 puggles - does mean it couldnt have been 3 beagles the next day.
I have seen golden retirevers are the shelter! boxers, jack russells, etc.

I agree...the only dog that I think is more frequently abandoned over any others are Pit Bulls and they are not a cross breed. Pit Bulls also tend to be abandoned more because they won't fight or have become useless in fights as opposed to families not being able to care for them anymore also.

Yes, that is true, I mentioned the puggle because it is one of the latest in cross breeding.

Just wanted to mention on pits since there was post. They are the #1 breed euthanized throughout the US....12 million yearly, why? They are in abundance. NYC has mandatory spay neuter law in public housing but it is not enforced yet that is where majority come from.
