No joke - my stepdaughters' mom lives like that - they can't even sleep in their own bedrooms because its too messy and they don't clean - the girls sleep on the couch....
How old are they. They can clean their own room right They can - but why would they if their mom lives like that? Who are they learning from? I get on their a s s es when they are here with us, but because its something they are unaccustomed to, its not something they would naturally do....
I had a girlfriend in Highschool whose mom was a TOTAL packrat....yet her room was spotless...so I think thatthey could learn how to clean their rooms, no matter what the rest of the house looks like.

Re: Today on Oprah... 75 tons of junk in there house...
Right now Im living in an apartment which is basicaly half of my aunts house. Before DH and I moved in it took us 5 days to clean all of the junk out and another two to clean it spotless. It hadn't been lived in for 10 years and kept it as her storage spot! She has a serious problem and wouldnt let us throw out anything,,,she NEEDED to keep broken shot glasses, and pink and seafoam decor from the early 90's. It was such a pain in the a$$. Now her side of the house if full of junk still and ours is spotless so she likes to hang out on our side with us because hers is too "overwhelming" she says. I should call Oprah on her!!!

*I* just don't understand how you can live like that. Its just like us not understanding how someone can shoot heroin, get addicted to crack, or be an alcoholic. Its an illness like any addictive personality, unfortunately... some people gain weight to build an armor around them. Some people hoard or live in cluttered environments....

my mom grew up in a similar environment, and actually developed OCD about cleanliness. If theres a strong desire for order thats intrinsically there, then yes. But,. if there is no intrinsic motivation, no role models, and no one telling them they HAVE to clean (like we do) - then its not going to happen no matter if someone teaches them or not, KWIM?

I was repulsed at what was found underneath the piles. The organizer actually vomited by the dumpster and wound up with a fungal infection. Just disgusting

I saw another show on hoarding & the therapist on that show was explaining how hoarders' brains actually process information differently.

I hope that woman is getting therapy- there's so much more involved than just keeping stuff. It seemed like she was a shopping addict- she mentioned how now she really tries to stay out of stores.

Hi, my name is Sophie and I am a recovering hoarder/packrat.
Honestly, I don't know why I do it. The best book I read about it was "organizing from the inside out" to understand why people do it. They are multiple reasons. I think it's a comforting thing. The more you have the more you feel in a sense of "comfort/safety". Yet, you feel overwhelmed that you have so much, you don't know how to edit and purge. Everything has it's own attachment reason. You laways feel you are going to need it later.
It takes huge self-control for me. I really have come a long way to understand.
And I stop buying stuff all the time.

Very good explanation, sophie... from what I know of you, I'm actually very surprised to hear this!!! You seem so organized - if anything, I would have pegged you as a minimalist!

That's because I have to control me all the time. It took me years to learn to let go and sometimes I get a "relapse". It's like you know you can't do it but you go back to it again. For me, it's a full time job.
After having moved so many times unopened boxes of junk from place to place, I got tired. I think I came to really realize how much of a problem it was a few years ago especially after I found a CC receipt from CVS for $0.56 (YES..... about half a dollar) that I had kept for 7 YEARS.
Clutter is "addictive" for comfort but yet very stressful.
Whoever is a packrat will totally understand what other packrats go through. It's actually mentally draining to not being able to let go. I don't think non-packrats understand packrats.
