Toddler waking up & crying for us during night - suggestions?
My 2 year old was always a pretty good sleeper. Last couple weeks he's been resistant going to bed (after the whole bedtime routine & he does have a sound machine), climbing out & crying at his gate for us. Usually opening his door & telling him it's time to go to sleep & to lay in his bed does this trick after a few times.
BUT a couple times each night for the last week or two, he's been waking up at 2am, 4am, 5am.. and cries for us at the gate. First few nights we went in comforted and stayed with him a bit, which may have made it worse.. We want to break this now before it gets worse. We tried ignoring but he gets more worked up. Without going in his room we said to go back in his bed, it's time to sleep. Again, took a few times but he'd eventually stay quiet and fall back asleep.
We have baby #2 coming in May & I can see this getting much worse if we don't find a solution now.. Any suggestions?

Is he still napping during the day? Maybe not as tired at bedtime. Also did he switch to a bed recently maybe adjusting to the freedom

He does still nap for a couple hours in the afternoon. He can't keep his eyes open once it hits like 2/3:00. he naps until 4-5ish (2 hours max). He stays up later though, usually in bed by 9 & asleep by 10.
No recent bed switch. He moved to a twin in Sept, but we didn't have any of these issues until a few weeks ago.

I posted something similar recently. My 2 yr old has been doing the same thing. It happened when DS1 was that age and wound up being molars. DS2 was an infant at the time so it was tough. Now DS2 is 2 and giving me issues with going to sleep. He used to be a great sleeper. Now he screams for the lights on and yelling he doesn't want to go to sleep. I know he got his 2 yr molars so its not that. Not sure what to do, but I feel your pain.

YES! This just happened to me. I think we have it fixed. In my research I found she was either:
Hungry Cold Needed a later bedtime
So I started giving a snack and some milk before bed, turning the heat up 2 degrees and dressing her warmer, and we made bedtime 1 hour later gradually. She hasn't woken up during the night in about a week so it seems to be working. It took about 2 weeks to get it just right I think!
Good luck!

Re: Toddler waking up & crying for us during night - suggestions?
Thanks ladies. He did it again last night at 12 & 3.. He went back to sleep at 12 but wouldn't settle down at 3. I had to stay with him & while I passed out, I think he was awake next to me just playing with his stuffed animals until about 5. (I kept waking up when he moved) Then he slept until 7.
Ugh... So if it's molars, how would I know? He normally tells me if something hurts, but he's not complaining. Should I maybe try Motrin before bed?

maybe try moving his nap up? I think him napping until 5 is way too late. even if he tries to go to bed at 9 thats only 4 hours inbetween.

This is my DD exactly! she is usually a great sleeper and the past few weeks has been crying for me in the middle of the night and even for naps. She will be 2 next month so I am thinking it's her molars!
I actually gave her Motrin last night and she didn't wake up!

Oh good to know! I'm definitely going to try the Motrin tonight then. His molars must be bothering him then.

I was thinking the same. DD naps at 1 and I try not to let her sleep past 4 bc it will effect her sleep at night. Especially if he can't keep his eyes open by the time he's going down. Maybe he's overtired which is effecting her sleep at night too. If DD doesn't sleep well during the day I find she's more likely to wake at night. Thankfully she usually just wakes up and chats for a while before passing back out again.

Molars may not 'hurt' but they ache and its the whole jaw and dull headache. Its not really specific. I had a little gum infection recently and it was just sore all over and achy but not painful and would wake me up. Mine only lasted a day or two but I can only imagine what molars would feel like!
I believe at 2 we limited her naps to 1hour max when we could. She was down to just one nap a day by age 3 for preschool.
