Toddler waking up at night and whining - WWYD?

DS is 20 months and has been waking up sometime between 3:30-5:30AM for the last week. He'll wake up and start whining. Usually no cryingChat Icon If either I or DH go in there and hold him for about 20-30 minutes, he'll go back to sleep no problem.

Last night we decided to just wait and see if he'd go back to sleep. He whined for an hour and did not go back to sleep! Close to the hour mark he started to almost cry. I went in there and rubbed his head (he stands as soon as anyone walks into his room) and told him it was still "night night" time. I left and he started crying. Off DH went to rock him back to sleep. He was up almost 2 hours total.

What do we do? I'm not liking this phase. He definitely knows how to put himself to sleep as he's STTN since 4 months and has no problems falling asleep for his nap.

HELP!

sounds like you have to do some sleep training! If your DS is used to you going in to soothe him, he's going to be upset when it doesn't happen. You have to be CONSISTENT with whatever approach you take. Having DH or yourself go in to soothe him some of the time won't work. It's either all the time or NEVER (except of course if he's sick or something... I'm only talking about for the next week or two until this is corrected.)

DS does the same thing (also 20 months old) and we just leave him. He might sleep longer in the am or a long nap to make up the missed sleep, but we leave him be. It gets better as each night goes on. HTH.

DS does that when he is teething hardcore. He will go back to sleep if I rock him. Usually within 20 minutes he is fast asleep.. I can't not go in and soothe him when I know something is wrong.. It only lasts a week or so and he goes back to his normal routine...

I don't know, don't really think so. He's missing his 2-year molars and it's white back there but i don't think he's "actively" teething if that makes sense. Shows no signs of teething during the day.

DS has had some phases where he wakes up in the middle of the night and stays awake for an hour+ but it never involves whining.

So hard to know if something is wrong or he's just waking up just because. I get bad migraines when my sleep is disrupted so I'm hoping this ends soon.

My DD has been doing this the last several nights - she is only 12 months but I am chalking it up to teething...she has a few coming in.

Is he teething? Sometimes they feel the pain before you see anything.

Or could he have an ear infection?
