tomorrow my little boy goes for surgery. so nervous

back in november they found a cyst next to my sons eyebrow. it has doubled in size and they decided to wait till hes a year to have it removed. hes a little over 13 months and we go tomorrow. i am so nervous havent slept well in over a week. totally stressed out. does anyone have any experience with anethesia at a young age and what i can expect.

my son usually wakes up and wants a bottle right away. were going to the hospital for 6 and hes not being operated on till 7:30. how is he going to last 1 1/2 hours without his bottle. im worried about the screaming and then the administering of the anestesia. please help me with my nerves. i already know its going to be a sleepless night.

I had the same procedure done when I was a child! It was fine and you cannot even see the scar

kate they are able to go in through his eyebrow so there will be minimal scaring. im just freaking about the anestesia.

DS also had a surgery where they wanted to wait til he turned one year. I was a freakin' mess. He always took a bottle as soon as he woke up and I was nervous about him wanting to eat inthose few hours before surgery. But he was fine! We kept him occupied with everything we could think of. Does he have a favorite show? Try to bring a portable DVD player. (Not sure what the protocol is on these in the hospital.)

I know at Stony Brook they have a children's playroom before surgery. This really kept him going. We also walked him up and down the hallway dozens of times. (I think it helped because he officially walked a week after his surgery for the first time.)

As for the anesthesia, I was told to be prepared for anything. They could throw up (so bring extra clothes for yourself and extra stuff to change him if he gets sick in the car), but mostly they are just out of it. DS first woke up and was hysterically crying, then fell back asleep. Then he half woke up again and softly cried against me. He fell asleep on the way home, napped for a few hours then woke up as if nothing happened. I've heard other kids can be fine immediately or want to sleep all day.

But one thing is for sure: The anticipation was much worse than it actually happening.

thanks kelly. that helps a lot. i packed extra clothes for him but not for myself. i throw a shirt in his diaper bag. we gave him a big dinner and then oatmeal with bananas around 9. he took only 1 nap today instead of 2 and was a wreck. at 945 he woke up screaming. i think since hes so overtired it got to him. i soothed him and he went back to sleep. i just went in there and gave him 8 oz of milk. hopefully we dont wet through the diaper. they said no milk after midnight. i think he will be fine with sleeping.if he wakes in the middle of the night im screwwed becuase hes used to a bottle. normally he sleep through the night but he was sick last week and went from sleeping all night to waking one to two times. last night he woke once becuase he was restless and tuesday night sleep solid. huntington hospital has a playroom and tv. he really doesnt have anything thats his favorite except for his blanket which im bringing with us. i know its a minor surgery its the anethesia that takes the longest.

i called and they said water or juice very little if he wakes. i think since hes got a full belly he will sleep solid. lets hope his diaper holds all that milk. we need a fingers crossed emotion.

DS had surgery a few weeks ago and I was a mess b/c of the anesthesia. It scared the crap out of me. DS's surgery wasn't scheduled until 11:00 and he wakes up around 7:30. All I could give him was water but nothing past 8:00. I kept him busy and he didnt even whine or cry for food. And when he woke up from the anesthesia, other than being groggy, he was fine. No crying or screaming. I was shocked!

B/c I'm a nut I read a ton on kids and anesthesia and asked the dr's a million questions. You have a better chance of dying in a car accident than having a serious reaction to anesthesia.

He will do great!
