Tooth question?

Isn't a tooth DEAD after a root canal?

I had one back in October, and for the past 2 days, that tooth has been getting throbbing pains.

I'm calling the dentist tomorrow- but this is so frustrating! I paid a lot of money for that darn root canal, I hope its not botched. Chat Icon

well..............., it depends whether or not the root canal was done to the bottom of the root, meaning the apex of the root. OR they could have gone through the root tip- preforating it and that can cause pain or eventually loose the tooth after doing an apicoectomy( taking off the root tip).

Also remember your gum tissue is still alive around that crown or tooth now. Did they put a crown there? the crown may not be fitting correctly either.
Def go to your dentist.

to educate yourself on what a preforated root tip looks like go on the internet and do a search and also do a search for root canals with pictures. When you go ask to see your tooth on the view box and see where the gutta percha = the filling you will see in the root now, is.

good luck.

Re: Tooth question?

The result is still a dead tooth, but at least it’s a dead tooth that will remain lodged in the gums. That’s because an infection that runs out of control eventually kills the gum cells that anchor the tooth. Of course, sometimes not all of the infected tissue is removed and this can result in a re-infection that could require remedial surgery.

Re: Tooth question?

yes a root canel removes the nerve in your tooth, so its dead, thats why it turns black and you need the cap. I have had pain after mine before, and it's due to an infection or irratation to the gums...

Are you getting a crown? which tooth is it? in the back or front? if in the back I would HIGHLY suggest getting a crown/cap. when the nerve is removed from your root tip, the tooth becomes brittle b/c you are no longer getting nutrients to the tooth.( the nerves provide nutrients to the tooth) you can bite into something soft and crack the tooth and if cracked too close to gums you wont be able to even get a crown youre looking at bridge or implant at that point.

to re do a rct YES they do charge for that. because sometimes a RCT is not done on ALL of your root tips- thats another thing to remember! the back teeth have 3 roots so if they only did 1 canal- you still have 2 others alive.

Im a dental hygienist Chat Icon I should know this stuff, LOL.

ah so all 3 and 14 is your upper left first perm molar- you should def have a crown there!!!! why didnt they put one on? that tooth needs a post and core and a crown. your tooth is probably rotting and the infection is affecting your gums. You can get a cavity on the enamel of a tooth that has had a rct and that even has a crown. for that to happen with a crown its b/c it didnt fit right and bacteria got underneath it and ate away at what tooth you have left holding the crown.
Im just surprised they didnt put a crown on there. the tooth is dead but still able to rot, get a cavity AND irritate your gums, def! feel better!!! and I hope they did the RCT right!

Chat Icon Chat Icon I would get a new dentist. Did he do the RCT or did you go to a specialist- an endodontist? if a reg dds did it, then theres your problem. I hate to say that too, but thats why they made a speciality=endodontist for them.

I feel bad, Chat Icon def go to him and see if they recharge you too, a specialist would def, not sure if your dentist if they did it would since it was jus done.
