I know. GOD FORBID!! I was at a a baby shower this weekend where I really didn't know anyone but a few friends - and the champagne punch looked sooooooooo delicious that I was so tempted to take a small cup but was in fear for my life that I would be chased down by some crazy Italian grandmothers. especially if they were packing wooden spoons

I do think people can get carried away, but i guess it is their way. I was very laid back. I still drank regular coffee , ate cold cuts had sips of champagne and still got ridiculed...like you are allowed to eat "that". Well, it is my choice, and my boys are fine I do believe Everything is in moderation, whether you are PG or not

Our friend who was ready to deliver at any moment, was having some red wine at a party... and you should have heard some of our friends "Gasp.. she's DRINKING???" Since i was ttc and read a million things, told them "Yes, you can have drinks in moderation at this point!" Mind your business!

Re: Topic for discussion: Do you think preggos/parents are getting too neurotic?
I think the internet is part of the reason. When I read the lists of what people on this site don't think you should eat when they are pregnant I am amazed. My dr. never said half those things were bad.

I'm definitely more laid back- but some things I did/will do for a reason.
1. Washed everything- my husband was the bubble-boy as a child and allergic to EVERYTHING. His skin is still super sensitive, so he made me wash everything with gentle detergent- we also bought all cotton items, no blends.
2. No peanuts in third trimester- this one holds water for people with peanut allergies in the family (JAMA published research). See #1.....
3. No bedding in the crib, no toys in the crib, no positioner in the crib. As someone who has first hand knowledge about the devastation of SIDS- I'm not taking ANY chances.
4. Organic food- but I've already done this for myself.
Otherwise, this poor child will be covered in animal hair and passed off to anyone who wants to hold her.
positioners have been linked to SIDS? and toys? where do i read up on this? thanks

I do agree about no toys in the crib or comforters. I put the sleepsack on my registry for this reason.

Re: Topic for discussion: Do you think preggos/parents are getting too neurotic?
i think as a pg, we can be neurotic. we want our baby to be healthy; but some go way too far. i try to eat the right things, but when i want mcdonalds, i have it.
not a parent yet, but i would laugh at my sister for being so protective of my nephew (now 5 months) but i see now that she is just doing what is best for him and that i will be the same way. as far as hands clean and all that stuff.

Re: Topic for discussion: Do you think preggos/parents are getting too neurotic?
Add me to the list of laid back mothers. I don't use special detergents, I don't own Purell, my milk is WHOLE milk (store brand...so I'm sure it's full of hormones) and I let her eat Gogurt! haha. I also REFUSE to breastfeed....
I didn't breastfeed with my first and she didn't contract her first cold until she was 2. She ate cheerios off the floor ALL the time, played with my mom's dog while eating the cheerios and I certainly never worried about washing her hands after the park for the drive home when she sucked her thumb.
Oddly, my mother solely breastfed me and I was quite a sick baby. Pneumonia before 1 year! I was a candidate for tubes in my ears as well. The kids my MIL watches eat tons of organic foods and mainly "fresh" fruits as opposed to jarred/canned fruits....they are sick ALL the time. It's a crapshoot in my opinion!

Re: Topic for discussion: Do you think preggos/parents are getting too neurotic?
I think that there are a lot of neurotic parents but I think that there always were. My mom keeps saying that when I was born (a looooooong time ago) they didn't know what they know now. However, I know that my mother is a worrywart and that she found plenty to be neurotic about. She keeps saying that when she was pregnant, her doctor REQUIRED her to eat a certain amount of cottage cheese every single day. There are other examples like that. Also, I think she knew people who kept their newborns away from others for a very long time.
As for chemicals and such, I am just starting to do some reading about baby formula and baby food. If I formula feed, it will most likely be organic. I admit that I don't eat all organic and some of what I eat is total garbage. My baby will have plenty of time to decide to eat non-organic foods later on.

The organic food - I agree with karacg on. I think eating food without pesticides doesn't mean you're neurotic.
Thank you! I eat organic because I just believe it is so much better to go that route - I did that WAY before baby... and its not like I'm going to eat organic and the baby will just eat crap!

Re: Topic for discussion: Do you think preggos/parents are getting too neurotic?
I'm usually one of the most laid back in my group of friends, but for the first 8 weeks I did (and will) require hand washing and purell as a fever could lead to meningitis. but other than that I actually welcome germs for DS. I want him to build antibodies, etc. I haven't bought anything antibacterial in years, as I read that it just leads to stronger strains of bacteria that are harder to kill.
a non-preggo recently said to me when we were out to dinner that she was so happy to see me drinking a glass of wine.

Re: Topic for discussion: Do you think preggos/parents are getting too neurotic?
Yes!...BUT I understand where it all comes from. Its sometimes hard to ignore all the media, the friendly advice, etc.
As most of you know this child isnt my first and over the years I have seen things change from good for you..to bad for you..and back again! So Im more apt to go with what works for me. One of those things is to try and not worry so much.
