Re: Trendy NYC restaurants
Il Bagatto on the Lower East Side. Great Italian food. VERY NYC kind of place. A tourist would walk right past it. (That's if a tourist was ever on the lower east side).
You have to like a place that is so proud of one of their dishes that it says on the menu--NO PARMASEAN ALLOWED.
Don't think its snooty. I know it sounds like it. Its just very cool and they treat their food like art rather than mass producing it to make a lot of money.

Re: Trendy NYC restaurants
I have been to Il Bagatto a bunch of times and I definitely would not call it trendy at all.
These are a little old and not the newest around, but some of my faves:
Spice Market Balthazaar Pastis (for brunch) Tao Buddkahn Buddha Bar Butter Mesa Grill Megu Nobu Per se

Hmm...maybe I'm misunderstanding "trendy." I guess NYC-esque would be a better description.

The View in the Marriot Marquis. DH and I have been there a few times. If they are visiting from abroad, they would love it. A panoramic view of NYC! Make reservations first

I loved Balthazar, but found it very loud. The food was outstanding!
Eleven Madison Park is great too. They have a chocolate souffle to die for!

This restaurant was just recommended on a food board I chat on. Looks really nice and trendy. A lot of seafood on the menu.
