Trick or Treat Q
DO parents let the kids actually eat the candy now a days?
I remember a while back the razor incidents and most parents not allowing the kids to eat any candy..
SO are they eating them now?
DO parents find this safe?

Re: Trick or Treat Q
This is what I do with my sons. (Well, the 4 1/2 year old, the other is a baby ).
I let my son pick out 5 pieces that I've OK'd from his bag.
The rest we leave for the "Halloween Fairy".
While he's asleep, I take the candy (for DH and myself ) and in it's place, leave a little toy or book.
In the morning, my son finds his treat left by the "Halloween Fairy".
This way, my son has limited candy and a toy...and DH and I get the loot!
Works out for all!

Re: Trick or Treat Q
My kids eat are allowed to eat their candy after we check it. If anything looks the least bit suspicious then we throw it out.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
My nieces and nephews do (and so do their parents ) The parents do a very thorough check and then let the kids eat it, but try to portion it out over many days.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
When we went trick-or-treating as kids - we were only allowed to go to the houses of people my parents knew so that way the "bad stuff" was not an issue.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
Thanks.
It works for us. Though a few days after Halloween, my son does ask..."So...did the fairy leave ANY candy here for me?"
I always have to have a piece on stand-by!

Re: Trick or Treat Q
We thouroughly check it and hide the stash. Alot of people in my neighborhood are either not home OR just don't answer the door and leave a variety of goodies in a basket with a 'take one' sign

Re: Trick or Treat Q
The kids in my neighborhood all know each other...as far as I know, they get all the candy after careful inspection.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
Good question- I'd be nervous if I had a kid of trick or treating age.
Also, I realized today that almost all our stuff has peanuts- and there are so many kids with nut allergies that it has to make things even harder for some parents. I wish I'd thought of that sooner.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
All of us eat the candy!!! We know all the houses we go to as I grew up in the neighborhood and most of the same people live here and we go to them year after year. Of course if we saw something suspicious we would throw it away but I find no harm in them eating what they get.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
Man I wish I read about the Halloween Fairy sooner.
My kids can have one piece of candy after dinner for a few days. Then the candy is "spoiled" and needs to be thrown away (or snuck out to my co-workers). My son is obsessed with his milk spoiling - no idea why. So it's just logical that candy would spoil too.
eta. as long as it's sealed they can choose it.

Re: Trick or Treat Q
Well judging from the fact that I smuggled a Reese's peanut butter cup and a mini bag of peanut M&M's from my parents house and ate them, then'd I would say that kids eat the candy
