True or False...kids that walk early on take longer to learn to speak

I read that recently and wondered how true that was for the BTDT moms. It would explain why DS was walking at 10 months but now at 12 months (next weekend) he can only say mama, ada (which is dada), and nana (banana...this kid loves bananas lol). Everything else is just gibberish and babble.

I've heard this too. My pediatrician actually said that kids that are more "physical" at an early age might take longer with their speech. DS is 14 months old, and he's been walking for awhile. He says Dada, Mama, Hannah (my DD) and um ums for food. That's about it. A lot is jibberish right now. Each child develops differently though.

Um DS is not walking and he is almost 13 months, he only says "cat", "hi" and "taki" which is for Shiitake our cat!

It's really something that I see very often. Many times, kids are "walkers or talkers" - Loey is 9.5 months old and just started taking steps. He's not a big babbler at all. I'm not too worried!

Could be true.

However, 1st word at 12 mos is completely typical.

This was true in my case. My dd was walking by 11 months but was hardly talking, yet my ds was talking in 3 or 4 words sentences by 16 months but still wasnt walking.

My DD walked at 10 months and was talking early too. I don't recall exactly how old she was when she said her first word but I do remember that at 18 months she was putting 2-4 words together.

My DD walked at almost 13.5 months...and she still isn't saying any words...maybe mama, but not consistently...otherwise she still babbles.

DS walked just before 13 months. He was a late talker.

I don't think that's true. My DS walked right at a year (that seemed a little early compared to DD) and he's not quite 2 yet and speaks very well IMO. He's almost to full sentences and I think for the most part he's easy to understand.

I've seen this. My friends who have early walkers...8 months, have late talkers. I think the kid just focuses on something different.

DD wa an average walker IMO at just under a year and was a very early talker.

According to my mom, I walked at nine months and talked very early too. By 2 1/2 I could recite the whole poem Twas the night before Christmas.

Not true for my girls. My first DD was full time walking at 9 months. By 11 months she could say:
"whats dat", "abby"(our dogs name), "up", "mama", "Dada"

My second DD was walking at 10 months and she was a huge talker from early on. By 12 months she could say almost every small word we asked her to say. By 18 months she was saying many 3-4 word sentences. Her first 3 word sentence was at 14 months she would say "where'd Abby go?".

I was wondering this myself. DD is ahead verbally and she started saying mama, lala and hi at 6 months (not that she knows what it means ), but barely rolls and is generally late on everything physical.

DD walked at 12.5 months and started speaking in short phrases at 15 months, by 18 months she was conversational and now at 20 months she is out of control with talking/singing etc.

Ryan didn't walk til 14 months but had 40-50 words at that point and phrases (3-4wds) by 17-18 months - and fully conversational 19-20 months.

Abby was a late walker tough within range (3 days shy of 16 months) and an early talker. Now she is hyperverbal. Keep in mind there are significant differences between boys and girls as well as first children vs. second and third children.

DS was an early talker, late walker. My DD seems to be early for both. She is 7.5 months and has been crawling for around a month now, she can take steps holding our hands, can get into a modified sitting postion from lying down and says mama, dada and hello. Now it doesnt mean she will be an early walker but like Goldi said, I find as the 2nd child she is constantly trying to keep up with her brother. She is sooo active, we are so not used to it lol

true in my experience but i dont think true medically. like i dont think its true for all.

False for us. My dd was fully walking at 10 1/2 -11 months and had about 30 words by her first birthday. At 15 months she had over 50 and was stringing 2 words together. A couple of months later she was making full sentences.
I understand the logic behind it, but don't think it is true for all.

I always heard that but in my case it was true for one kid but not the other.

My 1st child walked around 12 mos but but pulled up, crawled, and all that real early - was cruising around at 8 mos and had all that other stuff fully done by then. He didn't take off with his speech until after 2. Had maybe 5 regularly used words at 18 mos.

My 2nd son - I couldn't even keep track of his regualrly used words by 13 mos (I was keeping a list because #1 was a late talker and I always had to keep track). He walked by 11 mos and ran a week later. He didn't pull up, crawl or that stuff as quick as the first one but still did that stuff relatively early. So wasn't true at all for him.

My DS walked at ten months and was an early talker but every kid is different!
