Re: Truly sad

i find it sad, that we as a society, and this includes me, look at the death of an American president as nothing more than a day off.

Hey, I'm not saying I wouldn't be happy if my company was closed. A day off is a day off and if you have little time off, you take what you can get.

But it just saddens me that we don't reflect on what Ford did for this country.

Especially when you read and hear alot these days about what's wrong with America.

I don't know alot about Ford's presidency, but I know that he was instrumental in working to regain trust from a country that had been lied to by Nixon, and from many who felt the war in Vietnam was unjust.

IMO, if you hold the title of President of the USA, you deserve some sort of reverence when you die. I do realize that I am making a bit of a stretch including our current leader in that group. So, you all can argue him Chat Icon

I'm not saying not to be happy about a day off - like I said, take what you can get. If your kids are off too, enjoy the day with them. I don't judge anyone. But I would hope that we would take a short time that day, even if it is like 60 seconds to reflect on the small role Ford played in trying to make this country better.

Same goes with MLK day later this month. I am ashamed to admit that I often look at this as nothing more than a 3-day weekend. And that's fine - we're all human. But, given the state of race relations, where we've gone, and where we need to go, I have to try harder to reflect on the strides King made to bring equality to this country.

Off soap box.

Re: Truly sad

I will agree with you Don. I actually remember Ford as President just barely. I think it would take little effort for those who don't to research his contributions to US history. I may be wrong, but Im going to guess that people are just pretty far removed from his presidency. Not that it is an excuse.

WHOA! Then I am older than I think. Someone tried to blame Carter's election on me once. I was only 6.

actually i should rephrase that

i was born in 76 - so technically Ford was president when I was born
