I went to college in PA and we had the same thing. No MLK day off and we NEVER shut down if it snowed, but hunting season started and it was a freakin' holiday!!

Ask a kid why we have off in January and you get a blank stare. Ask them who Britney is and they can go on forever.

But whose fault is that? I blame parents and schools for not educating the children on who these people were that contributed to some form of change in America.

Each day that I teach, I don't just teach my subject matter but other information that they need to know in order to hold an intelligent conversation. I am even going to throw a bone here and say that I speak to many adults who cannot hold a conversation of great substance. They know very little about politics (except that they are a democrat and hate Bush) they cannot discuss world religions, international happenings, but they can tell you that Brad and Angelina won't get married until everyone can get married.

And Captain, I think that is most SAD!

Hunting Season was a way of survival for many families in the past. That is why they have the day off. The same as why we have summers off in schools, the children were needed to work in the fields. The family unit needed to hunt in order to make it through the winter.

I don't know about this. Just because people can't hold a converesation about the things that interest you, doesn't mean they have no substance.
There are different types of inteligence. Not all of them have anything to do with talking about politics.

I agree. Espeically since most adults prefer not to talk about politics, anyway, because it's a personal matter to them.

I understand your point on this, but that is a serious stretch for a day off!!!!!

Yes, it is sad, and yes, many people cannot hold a decent conversation (I include myself in that statement concerning some subjects). We as a society have become so self-involved that we don't have concern for our NEIGHBORS, let alone a president many of us don't even remember.....

And to think that our kids will look at 9/11 as just another day, who knows if it will become and actual day off, but to us it will be much more than that.....

It's just a little sad, like Dona said....

I didnt miss your point - I said I agreed to an extent - I agree that we should have a moment of silence - but I dont think that you should put down people who are happy for having a day off for a guy who was president for 2 years and was in his 90s when he died...

what do you do on Memorial day? do you visit soldiers graves or do you go to the beach and a bar-b-que??

again, if you read my original statement, it's as clear as day that i didn't put anyone down - i included MYSELF as part of everyone else.

sad to say, but on Memorial Day, I should pay more reverence to the soldiers than I do.

Yes, it's a federal HOLIDAY...however Tuesday is noted as a Federal Day of Observence, which means it's not a Holiday - to be celebrated every year.

no, b/c schools are state run. the Fed gov can only order Fed institutions be closed.

I have off on Tuesday. May God rest President ford's soul. I don't think you can say for a fact that everyone is looking at it JUST as a holiday. I, for one, am not.

I didn't live through WWII, but in my travels, I've made sure to visit Hiroshima, Dachau, and Pearl Harbor. I pay my respects to the past and pray to God that we think before we act in the future. But I also enjoy my vacation and my time.

You reflect, but move forward and enjoy the life you're living.

I listen to Pride on MLK day and think of this great man...but I also shop and take advantage of the sales...

there is nothing to be done for commercialism...it's what keeps our economy running.

this is a soap box thread...and you are entitled to say your peace.

perhaps you could start another thread with all of the things Ford did in his short tenure. He was a great man. He was President when I was born...and he continued to do great things throughout his life.

may God Bless him and his family, and you and yours.

and may everyone have a DAMN good time enjoying and celebrating LIFE on their day off.

It has nothing to do with what interests me. And your right there are multiple intellegences but how many people can speak intelligently on many subjects/topics? (Music, history, politics, literature, technology, science, religion, world topics)

Maybe I am a social ellitist but it bothers me when out with a group of people the conversation turns to sex and celebrity gossip. It gets old fast.

I know PLENTY of people that are well spoken on many subjects. It's probably b/c I seek that characteristic when meeting people, but it's who you surround yourself by.

I wasn't talking about this Tuesday I was referencing the people who said their schools were open on MLK Day.

ditto. But, i also like the 'break' sometimes. Some of the most intelligent people that i've ever met, were also some of the funniest dumbasses i ever hung out with, too. Its the balance between the 2 that add to the depth of someones personality, imo. And, what's so bad about Sex? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sex and celebrities are multiple topics Chat Icon
Just kidding- but my point is, that discussions based in fact and opinion, and people's inteligence levels, are not directly related. You don't have to have a masters in art history to be an artist.

I'm just saying that I think people discuss shallow things because it's easy, and safe, conversation. Not because it's all they know or care about.
At least, in my experience, this is the safe road I have taken.

Re: Truly sad

I think there is plenty of reverence for Ford (I think that you have to remember, kids really don't grasp the idea of death - even in HS - they have a feeling of immortality)

but the President is only 1/3 of the FEDERAL government. What point do we stop observing? Senators? Justices?
Congressmen? State Assembly? County Executive? The founders of the Constitution did NOT want the President to be king like and should not get different treatment than the other government leaders.

States make the ultimate decision, but the federal gov't can hold back funding for certain things (how they got the states to lower the speed limit to 55 in the 70's) I'm pretty sure the last state to not observe MLK day was in the 90's though.

[I looked it up and found that 2000 was the first year that all 50 states observed MLK day. I also found this which is very fitting to the thread: The theme of this years holiday is Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off!! ]

I have to admit that DH and I really didn't know much about Ford when the announcement of his death was made. We sat down to watch a news special about him - he was president before our time - and I have to admit that I am very impressed with him as person as well as his wife. I wish I had paid more attention to these things in school. Chat Icon
