Re: Truly sad
I think Ford was cool. I actually had to read a 600 pg bio of his during my undergrad Also dig him for this:
Ford
However, I am not sure anything more needs to be done than what is being done. I think the country does make a big deal whenever a president dies.
ETA: I think it is even more upsetting that Martin Luther King Day, Veteran's Day, and Memorial Day are more about shopping "sales days" and THEIR true meaning is forgotten

Re: Truly sad
I guess I need to learn more about what Ford did for our country, because for the most part, our presidents have all been corrupt and an embarassment. Martin Luther King Jr is a different story, he is in a league with Ghandi and Mother Theresa in my eyes. Sorry you are sad about this Don, I guess I have just focused ont he fact thatI hope all my loved ones live to 93, I consider him very lucky

Re: Truly sad
Actually I was kind of a little surprised at all the hoopla about a day off too.
Not that I can't understand why people wouldn't love a day off!
Granted he lived a long life and there is nothing sad about passing at 93 - but there is still a level of respect for life that should be there.
Anyway, I am in no way attacking anyone or trying to be negative towards anyone. If you have the day off, I hope you enjoy!

Re: Truly sad
i think the US is giving him the proper send off
and yes, he lived a long life
my point is, that we, as citizens, who are always complaining about the state of the world are looking at his funeral day, as nothing more than a day off, rather than a chance to reflect on his role in the progression of our country.

According to the news reports, President Ford wanted things kept simple - saying he was just a man...etc. He wanted a simple goodbye and according to the reports, he actually planned his own funeral (in part or in full, I don't know).

All presidents plan their services and funerals. I know for sue that Kennedy and Reagan did. They actually have them plan their funerals withint he first 2 months of their presidency (just in case) That must be a downer, huh? "Congrats you are th eleader of our nation, can you tell us if ou want roses or day lilies on your casket?"

I will agree with you Don. I actually remember Ford as President just barely. I think it would take little effort for those who don't to research his contributions to US history. I may be wrong, but Im going to guess that people are just pretty far removed from his presidency. Not that it is an excuse.
oh yeah, heck, most of us including me, weren't born
You so were

Re: Truly sad
if it's SNOWING on the day of his funeral, then do you think everyone will have off? (i know how much you LOVEEEEE those threads about the 'snow days')
I do hope that they air some shows/specials that show his contributions, so that people can realize and respect what he did for our country, but, at the same time.... he was sort of a stranger to most of our generation, so its hard to 'miss someone' that you didn't know much about until they died.

Ok...I am guilty of this...I was on that thread asking if schools would be closed....who wouldn't want an extra day off.
Like someone else said its hard when you are far removed from a person like Gerald Ford...which is definetely NOT an excuse.
I think in general our society loses sight of the reasons for these days off such as Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day etc...and I agree that is very sad

Okay, I've msised all of this with my hospital fun for the last couple of days.
Did everyone have off yesterday? Or is there an off day coming up?
I don't remember that for Reagan, but I could be wrong.

I have to be honest- President Ford's death just doesn't "affect" me, so I don't feel bad for being indifferent.
The death of Presidant Reagan had a much more profound effect on me- we sat and watched the news coverage for days.
I can't reflect on something I never knew....

I don't know alot about Ford's presidency, but I know that he was instrumental in working to regain trust from a country that had been lied to by Nixon, and from many who felt the war in Vietnam was unjust.
IMO, if you hold the title of President of the USA, you deserve some sort of reverence when you die. I do realize that I am making a bit of a stretch including our current leader in that group. So, you all can argue him
I agree with you - that anytime a president dies you deserve some sort of reverence - which I believe he is getting - who cares if people are happy about getting a day off for it?? he was well into his 90s when he passed away, something very much to celebrate - I personally know too many people who passed on much earlier than that and had no fanfare bc they were regular hard working americans.
Ford was never elected VP or President - and was only in office for two years and was NOT re-elected.
I would be happy to have a day off for a man who died at 90+ years old, was president 30+ years ago, for only two years and not elected.....ive had to fight my job for three days off when my father died at 45

you apparently missed the point of my thread because i addressed several of your points in my original post
My point is NOT how old he was when he died. I agree that he lived a long life.
And, as I stated above, I have no problem with people getting the day off - I know how hard it is to get vacation days, so you take what you can get.
My only point is that people are acting indifferent. Same thing happens on MLK day, and I am guilty of it too. I'm not saying spend the whole day in church and meditate, but I mean a freakin moment of silence on Tuesday wouldn't be a bad idea

I didnt miss your point - I said I agreed to an extent - I agree that we should have a moment of silence - but I dont think that you should put down people who are happy for having a day off for a guy who was president for 2 years and was in his 90s when he died...
what do you do on Memorial day? do you visit soldiers graves or do you go to the beach and a bar-b-que??

I agree with what you are saying completely. As a teacher, I make sure to discuss with my 1st graders why we have a day off, why there was a moment of silence, etc. But I think what plays a big part in this 'indifference' is that there is a seperation in our generation. In all honesty, when Ford was President, many of us were either toddling around in diapers or weren't even thoughts in our parents minds.
Look at Pearl Harbor vs. 911. Pearl Harbor was an atrocity. But we didn't live through it, so we go on with our day like nothing happened. No mention of history. But 911 is so fresh for us that we probably think about it daily.
I think about this stuff too, Don, because I always put a poppy in my car on Memorial Day and Labor Day. This is something that I'm seeing less and less of. Not that this has anything to do with Ford, but it's like a tradition is dying every year of remembering veterans and history makers. It's sad.
Ask a kid why we have off in January and you get a blank stare. Ask them who Britney is and they can go on forever.
