Xelindrya... call several local rescues, as many as you can find. Don't just wait on one at a time because it can take time. If the dog has to go ASAP, maybe you can get weekly or monthly boarding rates from a vet, and that will buy some time for a rescue to find a foster home. Not ideal but better than putting him in a kill shelter or even a no kill shelter where he will sit in a cage. He has terrible separation anxiety and would do much better in a foster situation where they could work on his anxiety.

I agree, no kill shelters do send out difficult to place dogs or long timers to other shelters including kill shelters. And they do put down certain dogs if they have medical or temperament issues. I have heard that North Shore is one of the shelters that dumps dogs, not sure if that is true.

I've heard the very same about North Shore. Chat Icon

I've also heard Little shelter too :(

It's terrible. There really are no safe shelters for dogs.

Sadly, the problem is not going away until spay/neuter laws are in place. I think that all shelters do what they can and it's simply a matter of numbers. If you have easily adopted dogs the turn over is much better. If you lock up one cage in a no kill shelter with an undesirable dog all those desirable dogs end up at kill shelters. One long term occupied cage can kill so many nice other dogs. Eventually everyone reaches capacity :o(

All you can do is keep spreading the word and keep pushing. Share on facebook, share anywhere you can. Remind everyone about what really happens to all those lost souls.

Sad update: Chat Icon

They just can't anymore. I had him on craiglist and the whole nine yards, lots of calls etc.

They are taking him to the shelter that already told him he'll have 3days to be adopted out.

I feel so shattered. What could I have done? Do I hate my dad for doing this. Do I judge my brother for allowing this. Its so heartless. Its unfair to the dog and seems to have no impact on my dad but my brother seems to think its 'best' for the dog. How?

I'm fumbling horribly with this.

I can't say this is right or wrong for them but.. i can say its wrong in my eyes and I am stuck with this odd guilt and helplessness.

Ugh .. sorry vent.

I'm just numb

How can anyone who you claim "adored" the dog do that? Disgusting. The poor thing is going to be so confused, then put down?

Horrible.

I'm really not understanding why a KILL shelter is an option at all if the dog is already living in your house. Hold on to the poor thing until you can find it a home.

I'm going to say that I agree since I don't think there has been enough time to rehome the dog. I would suggest getting a crate and crating the dog while he's alone. This whole story is confusing me a little bit. I understand the dog is a nuance but I think the humans in this instance need to be a bit more patient.

i can't care for him like he deserves.

I am hoping the guy i just talked to comes through.

Not everyone can have a dog. If I could, I'd have one of my own already. The dog has torn up our back door, caused my two cats to break/shatter their nails and that's WITHOUT direct contact (thru a window), my daughter is terrified of the dog (too big for her) and will hide in corners no matter how much I say and show its a good dog. The dog has torn up my father's arms (he has frail skin) and the VA is angry that if any of those get infected he can be in serious trouble.

so there are 3 people to care for this dog ?
stepmother
father
brother

and it's still too much to handle ??

great....so basically they effed up the dog by making it codependent on your brother.
Didnt teach it to be left alone, took it everywhere.

Now that the dog cant stay in the backyard and needs to be taken everywhere (because that is what he has been taught), it's too much to handle ??

If it's at your house, why dont you hold onto him until someone can take him?

TEACH him that he needs to learn to stay by himself. He'll learn. Build him a dog house, dog pen area. He can stay there during the day. Would your husband object to a dog that wasnt so high maintenance ??

With all these people to help take care of/train the dog....it's doesnt seem that they need to ditch the dog they sooo love this exact day. Hold onto him for two weeks, do craigslist, facebook. Let the dog stay in the backyard, he'll learn.

Odds are you are delivering that dog to it's death.

Listen, I understand that sometimes pets need to go. I would never tell a parent to keep a dog that has bitten or aggressive. But it seems like this is a great dog they grew tired of all the sudden.

better question is WHY GET A DOG AT ALL! (sorry im more than a little angry about this) my step mother is all in tears now (her fake arse crap) saying its her fault and she's blind, and deaf and old and on well. WITCH this is all on you.. you KNEW this would happen and you defied my father and did this anyway! I hate that woman. She's the ONLY one in this whole thing who seems nonchalant about it. Her words "its just a dog" omg I hate her so much right now you have no idea. Its NOT just a dog you wench its a life, its a responsiblity and he's innocent. YOU made this choice, YOU adopted him and you promised to CARE for him and love him.. not just abandon him when he got too big. GRRRRR *breathe*

The guy I talked to just called back said he is calling two other no-kill shelters (the ones i called) but he 'knows people'

so today the dog should be gone...
Father and brother found a foster shelter near one of our military bases. They took a lot of interested in him. Loved him and his personality. Nearly dropped him off right there and then but my brother asked for another night with the dog. I predict tears not only at drop off but all night tonight and tomorrow and the day after.

He wants a cat now. Which I should say they HAVE a cat but he wants one of 'his own'. Im so tempted to get him a turtle or a fish instead.

We'll see how tonight goes.

I really hope your brother does not adopt another living thing that will need to be dependent on him until he is able to provide a forever home for that pet.

yeah i called all 3...

AND I extended my search to Bulverde, TX, Austin and Houston.

ETA: Bulverde, TX is one of the places this guy is calling because he knows some ppl there. Its a small town north of SA about 30miles north of me. I am hoping since its a smaller town, more farm like area they can find someone to foster him until he's adopted out. I know I shouldn't put all my eggs in one basket but yes.. this is what I'm hoping VERY hard works out for him!

not harsh at all I just said the same thing to my dad "no pet, ever again. he doesn't deserve one" Dad agrees. If he wants a pet he can have a goldfish.. he's not mature enough to have an animal. They always push me back when I try to make him more self-sufficient saying he 'can't because of his illness' or his disability. Then my mom at one point said the dog was good therapy for 'people like him'. Chat Icon

You might not be able to care for him like he deserves...but ANYTHING is better than a death sentence. True, not everyone can have a dog, but then don't get one. IMO your family owes it to this dog to keep him until you find a place for him to go.
