Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy

What about an IUD? I have had Mirena for a year and a half and its been great. They put it in (painless, just like a pap) and then you don't have to worry about it for 5 years.
This is the route I went! I am much older than you, and although we are 99.99% done, I couldn't make it so permanent. It is absolutely the best form of BC that I have ever used.

I have 2 children, and am absolutely done.
I had my tubes tied during my 2nd c-section 4 months ago. I am 36.

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
I am 27 and I told DH that if/when we have a 3rd we are done and I would get a tubal. I just don't think I would get done until I was in my 40's. I have an IUD now and it works great for us. He said no to vasectomy.
My mom have a tubal done after my brother and her 4th VBAC (I was her first child and c-section) and they went through her belly button, this was 12 years ago. I remember her being a little sore and had it done 6 weeks after birth. She was 40 at the time and she did say a few times that if she hadn't done it, she probably would have one more.

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
Well financially I don't think we could afford a 3rd right now or anytime in the next 5 years, which by then we will have a 6 and 7 year old and I don't think I would want them that far apart.
Besides that my doctor won't do a mirena, he said he doesn't like them and is a big pusher of the pill

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
Im getting a tubal in April...only because thats when I will be having my c-section for my second child. I am 35 and my DH is 38 and we decided that 2 is enough for us. if i was having a vaginal delivery we would defintely have a talk about a vasectomy. Its just easier doing it while doing a C section

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
I had my DH get a vasectomy as a wedding gift to me For him it’s an easy one hour thing with a very easy recovery, and if you change your mind there is a possibility it can even be reversed. For me it would have been a major surgery. After all women go through (and I don't even have kids but feel i go through a lot every month ), I think the DHs can do one simple procedure for us.
Here’s what REALLY upsets me… my friend is 42 with 2 kids. Her DH won’t get a vasectomy so she made an appointment for a tubal. The nurse on the phone when she made the appointment said, “Well, we usually require your DH to be there for his consent…” When my friend told me that I FLIPPED OUT!!!! Are you KIDDING ME!!!!??? She’s not allowed to get a tubal at 42 without her DHs permission??? So nice to know we can control our bodies… sorry for the slight tangent but this just happened to my friend this afternoon so it’s on my mind

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
i had my tubal during my second c-section. after 2 miserable pregnancies, where i spent most of 18 months in bed with the weirdest collection of symptoms you can think of (and for hte most part none of them being morning sickness) i knew i couldn't ever be pregnant again. so since i already had the c-section scheduled, we added the tubal to the surgery. it took an extra 2 minutes.
if i didn't have the surgery anyway, i might be on the mirena right now. i had looked into it seriously before making a choice. it looks good. i used the depo shots for years, no periods, no cramps, nothing. was wonderful. mirena is supposed to do about the same with fewer hormones. i can't take the pill, makes the cramping 100 times worse.
also i was 35 when i had the procedure. i asked my DH if he would consider the V.... he went pale at the mention of it. but this is someone who faints when they take blood. so i can understand his hesitation.
personally if i was you, and you are young stilll, i'd find something that wasn't quite so permanent. a plain IUD if you really don't want hormones in any sort. i was 35 and had 2 such horrible pregnancies, even my doctor's didn't really want me to consider getting pregnant again. (my doc offered me a tubal before i had my first child, because of how miserable i was the enitre time....but i wasn't quite ready then)

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
I wouldn't get a tubal unless I have another one, and need a c/s.
Otherwise, I think we have already decided that DH will have a vasectomy. After what I went through, he can sit on a bag of frozen peas for a few days.

I can't tell you what to do, but personally I'd insist upon him getting the vasectomy. It's a procedure done in the doctor's office vs. full on surgery for a tubal, there are fewer side effects and if you change your mind about wanting more kids, it's much more easily reversed. If he refused, I'd buy a box of condoms (though I know you said you don't want that either, maybe it would be enough to convince him!).

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
Only because you are 26, I would push the vascetomy or find an alternative. I know you said you are done, but so many things could change in your lives.
You may decide down the road that you want more, or god forbid something happens to one of your dc's - you may decide you want another. I don't think it's a decision that can be made so far in advance especially when you have so many fertile years in front of you.

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
We are not planning on either because hormonal contraception controls my periods and I don't mind being on it. I would get a tubal but it would depend on the reason that my husband refuses to have a V. In my case, my husband has juvenile diabetes and he goes through so much on a daily basis that I do not want him to have any additional medical procedures. I'm not sure if he would refuse to have a V. anyway but I don't want him to. If he refused without a valid reason, I'm not sure if I would then commit to having a procedure, to be honest.

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
My DH promised to get a V but here were are 8 1/2 months later and nothing. I wasn't sure after Squishy what we were doing. I talked to my OB and he said the V was better, women tend to report more complications with their cycles after a tubal. This is a bone of contention for my DH and I. I know he is scared but I was scared of my 2 sections and did it.

I agree. A tubal is a lot more invasive and the vasectomy is easier to reverse should you change your mind.
I absolutely agree. My cousin got one - I watched the kids while they went. It only took maybe two hours for them to leave and come back. He had to take it easy for the next two weeks - no heavy lifting and keep ice on it. That's it!

The depo was my form of bc for years before i decided i was going to have another baby - i had no side effects at all. For me, it was a godsend.
eta - sorry, i meant to quote the posts about the depo shot.
At your age - i wouldn't do anything permanent - you never know what the future holds - I was 26 with my first and 34 when i had my twins - 8 years between them.

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
Personally, I would not have a Tubal.
Vasectomy is our only option in this family. And believe it or not, I will stand by that statement. I have done my share of birth control as well as creating a happy and healthy family. Time for DH to step up to the plate and take one for the team

I think when we decide we're done I will go with the IUD. I'm 27 and I couldn't imagine doing something so permanent right now. Then again, we're still planning on having more so my mindset might be different when I realize I am done!

Re: Tubal vs Vasectomy
My DH and I made a deal when I was pregnant with DS: if I need a c-section I will get a tubal. If not, it was up to him. Besides I had some pretty bad complications with Jack and my OB said she would not operate on me, that it was best for my health if my DH did it.
He lived up to deal and had it done a few weeks ago. He drove himself there and was home an hour later. He was sore, but fine. He was told not to lift anything too heavy. He did it on a Friday and was back to work on Monday.
If you have any specific questions feel free to FM.
Good luck with your decision

It goes the same for a man getting a V. My DH went through everything and canceled right before. I had to go to his consultations and sign paperwork that I was allowing the surgery. I think they do it for both when you are married.

I never had to sign anything for my DH's V. I never went to any appointments either. Maybe it depends on the doctor??
