twins sleeping together
I'm at the hospital after delivering my baby boy twins and they don't recommend that sleep together due to a new study that says there is an increased risk for sids. Infact they don't even really let u put them together at the hospital any more:( at home a planned to put them both in a full size co sleeper. I'm not sure what to do now. What is everyone planning to do or doing/done??? TIA!!!

Re: twins sleeping together
at the hospital they were always kept seperate in their own little bassinets but once home i kept them together in a crib till they were 5 months old, at that point we moved and finally had room for a second crib, i have never heard of this new information so i can't comment on it, other than to say do what you are comfortable with, is this what the hospital nurses are telling you or what the pediatrician is telling you, i would ask your pediatrician
oh yeah i almost forgot, Congratulations!!!

twins sleeping together
it is what the hospital nurses told me and I asked the hospital staff ped and she said I should put them together. The hospital nurses didn't even have the exact research to back it up but they mentioned sids and were pretty serious about it. I think I will sleep them together and I will double check with my ped. Thanks for the advice and well wishes! My boys are doing great and I'm still in aw of the whole twins thing. Just amazing:)

Re: twins sleeping together
I swaddled them and they slept together for the first 3 months. Once they started moving around at night I separated them. Congratulations!

twins sleeping together
I did the same as Carolyn, swaddled them as newborns and then separated them when they started moving. Especially when my one daughter started flipping over at 4 months. That was the worse. Sids is at the highest risk from 4-6 months and she wanted to sleep face completely down in the mattress. I always put her on her back and she always rolled onto her face. I got very little sleep in those months. There were times I would sleep with her in a recliner or just stay up and move her head to the side so her nose and mouth were not buried in the mattress.
I used an original co-sleeper. More often though I ended up sleeping with one if not both babies in my bed. I still sleep with one baby every night and they are 18 months now. I don't move around when I sleep and I am very aware of them. They get most of the bed and I sleep in a tiny ball somewhere. I don't recommend it at all. LOL
Now they are so big and take up so much room I try not to sleep with both of them in the bed. But I will do just about anything to get a little extra sleep :o) One of them still doesn't sleep thru the night. :o(
I think it is a much bigger no-no to put a baby with an older (or larger) child. But it might increase the risks just having them together. I would say more from a smothering standpoint rather than a SIDS standpoint.
I think the most important thing is to make sure you put them on their back to sleep. Studies prove a 40% decrease in SIDS with babies sleeping on their back:

Re: twins sleeping together
my girls slept together from the time they came home from the nicu till 10 months. They wanted to put them together/co-bed them in the nicu but they had different needs and couldn't be together until they were both out of isolettes(sp), which didnt happen until the day baby A came home.

Re: twins sleeping together
At the hospital my girls had their own bassinets but the nurses almsot always put them both in one! We kept them in one for most of the hospital stay. Now that we're home we are swaddling them and putting them in the same crib.

Re: twins sleeping together
Just curious does everyone put them together because they spent 9 months together? I didn't even think of that..my plan is to use the twin pack and play in the beginning and then separate cribs once they are out of the PNP...

Re: twins sleeping together
We put my girls together in the PNP for a few weks til we found they both slept better in RNPs. I can see the side risk. We put them sife by side but if one rolled a bit or came unswaddled the other was smooshed or covered. (we use A&A blankets but still)

Re: twins sleeping together
Congrats on your boys!! Mine slept in the pnp together for the first 2 months and then shared a crib till 3 months. We had to split them cause my big guy was pushing off one end and hitting his head on the other so they needed their own space. We swaddled them and used sleep positioner so they weren't going anywhere.

Don't worry- I did this too for space reasons, but they're always together at playtime and in the morning after the AM bottle in the PNP. They love being together even though they sleep separately at night. I plan on putting them together in the crib until they're older.
I am not sure why the hospital keeps them separate- you'd think that sleeping together would prevent SIDS. I say go with your gut and keep the cosleeper idea.

Re: twins sleeping together
I swaddled them together until about a month. Then they slept in the rock n plays separately for a month (reflux). Then at 2 months they slept together in the crib but with space in between them. At 4 months when they were really starting to move we separated them.
ETA: at the hospital as soon as they were in open air cribs the nurses had them swaddled together.

Re: twins sleeping together
My 3 slept separately in the NICU, bc they each had separate needs. Once they all came home, all 3 slept in the same crib for a good month and a half. Then one of my DS started moving around too much so he slept in his own crib and my other DS and DD slept together for another 3 months. By 6.5 months they were all in their own cribs.

Re: twins sleeping together
My twins were separate in the hospital and at home they slept in the same crib until around 3 months, once they starting moving around more. Since then, separate cribs and bedrooms.

My twins never slept together (or with us). Sids and avoiding one less transition were my reasons. they are GREAT sleepers !

Re: twins sleeping together
My boys were together in the NICU once their needs were the same and could be in the same room.
When we brought them home they shared a pack n play for a few weeks.
They slept together in 1 crib, swaddled separately, until they started moving and rolling around 4/5 months.
Now they sleep in separate cribs but in the same room.
I put them in 1 crib together for playtime sometimes and they really love that. Lots of giggles and laughter.
