typical preschool question?
Just wondering .....if your child was diagnosed with pdd nos or adhd...did you u send he/she to a typical preschool before their 3rd bday (before he/she could qualify for the preschool disabled program in public school)...also, how did he/she do in the typical preschool? and, say he/she qualifies for the public school program and they did well in the typical school, would you consider keeping him in the typical preschool rather than the public school program?
My son turns 3 on March 9th. I am hoping to get him qualified for the program in public school, but don't know if I want to change him midyear from his typical preschool. So far, he has adjusted nicely and things are going pretty smooth for him. Just need some opinions! Thanks!!

Re: typical preschool question?
DS was always in daycare prior to turning 3. He did ok there. It was a little bit less structured than he needed but we didn't have a choice. The upside though was that he had his EI aids there throughout the day to help with the issues.
Since our district only has the preschool disabled program for a half day only we had to keep him in daycare program and they bused him to the PSD program.
In my opinion in my situation I chose the PSD program. Ours is an integrated class (although they don't have nearly enough typical kids to call it that). But the teachers and staff are more readily equipped to handle his needs and have a trained eye on what to look for. Plus he continues his therapies there. And it's free

Re: typical preschool question?
Since his birthday is March he can stay in early intervention until August if you want him too. Then you can put him in the special needs preschool for the fall and it won't be a difficult transition in the middle of the school year.
I know some of the "public" preschools are integrated with kids from UPK programs so he could be with other normally developing kids. And the plus side is that its free!

Re: typical preschool question?
If he is doing well, and he is enjoying it,...I wouldn't change anything. You can always ask for therapy to be done in the school or even at home to help support his progress.

Re: typical preschool question?
Thank u for respondi.ng! He currently gets EI services at home and at his preschool. I just wasn't sure if I wanted to switch him to the public school midyear. He has some trouble with transition, so I thought it would also be easier for him to start the public preschool next Sept.

Re: typical preschool question?
If he is doing okay in his current school, I would keep him there. We only switched DS to an integrated PreK because he had problems, and even with a SEIT, he was having difficulties.
Have you had a conference with his teacher yet? If not, have one now and ask if she thinks he needs extra support.

How is that possible? I thought EI stopped at age 3. I live in NJ too, so I will talk to EI people today about that.

Right now, he has a developmental Instructor shadow him for two hours out of the three on Tuesday's and he has no EI person on Thursday's. I have been touching base here and there with the director and she said as of right now, they would be happy to work with him until June. They were going to hire someone extra for Thursday's class, but than told me he was adjusting nicely and that it was not needed. He still has a lot of motor planning/sensory problems/ possibly some social issues...but for now I am happy he is fitting in nicely. I also have a conference with the teacher at the end of this month...so we will see what she has to say...

Re: typical preschool question?
Just wanted to say that I'm in the same boat and don't know what I want to do yet. DS will be 3 in Feb and does great in his 2 day a week preschool...I am waiting to see the results of the CPSE evaluation when he has it and see what they say.
I'm also in NJ, in Bergen. Where are you?

Re: typical preschool question?
Maybe its different in New York. All the evaluations and transition will be done by his 3rd birthday but they will let us continue our EI services until the start of the school year. My DS birthday is in late May so its better for him to transition in August so that he still gets services throughout the summer.

My DD will be 3 in May and we get "aged out" of EI as of Aug. 31st 2012. We are actually touring DDI soon (Huntington) to see the school and program. It's going to be a toss up between them and the school my son goes to. We may be starting her in a program before August. She's ready for socialization and being around more kids (we do group PT on Fri and swim on Sat), but, looking for more. She's also starting to get distracted at her in home sessions, so, school may be the answer.
