Re: Ugh...I just lost my job today
Oh man, what a rough time to be laid off!! I'm glad to hear they gave you a decent severance package, still nothing makes losing a job easy.

Re: Ugh...I just lost my job today
I work for a mortgage company also and they laid off a few people at the very beginning of the year. I am always scared that I'm going to lose my job. I go back from my maternity leave in 2 weeks and I'm going to start looking for something else because I can't go to a job every day where I'm wondering if I'll still have one at the end of the day.
Take this time to get things ready for the baby and you'll have plenty of time to look for something else while you're on maternity leave. Things will work out.

Blessings come in weird ways -- maybe this will allow you to find another job that is perfect for your family Who knows?
Best wishes with everything -- and congrats on the 8 weeks severance! That rocks!

Re: Ugh...I just lost my job today
can you get them to pay you your 6 weeks maternity and 8 week severance. i was laid off at the end of my pregnancy and mine was actual discrimination they didnt want to pay my maternity. you might have the upperhand since your so close to your due date.

I don't think that would be an option. The reality the company/industry is not doing good. My job was a job that could easily be done by others and lately there were days that I actually had NO work at all. if I was the only one laid off I could say maybe discrimination but I honestly know it had nothing to do with that. They actually closed down 2 full offices last week. The mortgage industry has just been a bad business to be in lately.

Re: Ugh...I just lost my job today
OMG I am sooo sorry!!!! Well at least you can apply for unemployment benefits at the end of your severence pay period and that will at least be SOME income until you're able to find another position.. Stinks that it had to happen so soon to Rylan's arrival. At least you're staying positive!

I work for the mortgage department of a large bank. What kind of work did you do? I could see if we're hiring in any areas.

Re: Ugh...I just lost my job today
Remain positive, and try to find a job outside the mortgage industry. My mom worked in that field for 20+ years and averaged a lay-off once every 3-5 years. that industry is simply not stable, and caused her a lot of stress over the years. Try to shift into some other banking field
I'll know you'll find a new job soon! good luck!

Re: Ugh...I just lost my job today
I'm so sorry that they did this too you, but it sounds like you've got the right attitude. DO NOT wait until after you have the baby to apply for unemployment. Apply now and then add the baby when s/he comes to get a little more money. Not sure what they offered you for insurance, but see if they will allow you to stay on until the baby is 8 weeks.
I've actually been laid off during both of my pregnancies. The first time I was 5 months, I only got 4 weeks of severance and then unemployment. I was the one who held the insurance so that was my main concern. I used the fear tactic of a lawsuit and said I wanted my attorney to review the agreement and find out what my rights were since I was pg. A few days later the HR manager said they would keep me on the insurance at no cost to me through the end of my pg and 3 months after the baby is born. Then when I had a hard time finding a job, they let me stay on for a year until I found a job. I know I was so lucky.
The second time, I was 7.5 months. I only got 1 month severance. So DH wrote an addendum to my severance agreement saying that I would stay on the insurance and only pay the premium I paid when I was an employee until the baby was 3 months.
Let me know if you want to talk about it. Good Luck!
ETA: Both times I was not the only one laid off.... I just think that the employers didn't even want to take a chance that I would bring a lawsuit. I never once said the word lawsuit, I just said that I wanted an attorney to review the agreement before I signed. Come back with a counteroffer all they can do is say no.
