Uh oh, I think I bought the wrong thing! Yams???
I've never made sweet potatos before, but will be making them for T-day. Recipe called for fresh yams.
THIS is what was labeled as yams in the supermarket and I bought:
But I just googled images and most of the pics look completely different! I'm afraid I'm going to cut these open on Thursday to cook and they'll be white inside instead of that orange-y color.
Did I buy the right thing? I couldn't find anything labeled sweet potato at the supermarket, by the way.

Re: Uh oh, I think I bought the wrong thing! Yams???
So real yams are from Africa and are white and taste like chalk. What is advertised in the US as Yams or Candied Yams come in a can from a company in Lousianna or are in fact sweet potatoes. A candied yam is really a sweet potato which has been hulled and is the heart of the sweet potato "meat." A sweet potato is orange inside and sweet. I would sacrifice one and cut it open so you know what you have in case you need to purchase sweet potatoes.

What she said. The yam/sweet potato confusion drives me nuts for some reason. Why do these companies and even some super markets call sweet potatoes yams!?

Re: Uh oh, I think I bought the wrong thing! Yams???
wait i'm confused! lol i bought these orangey-colored, fat root-looking yams and they are orange on the inside but are called yams.....i thought yams were the root part of the sweet potato..
mine don't look like the OPs pic, they aren't hairy (no offense to your yams )
and now that i think about it...you never see a section of sweet potatoes...just yams, right?
why is this so difficult??

I think this is what you want. yams is just some kind of colloquialism for sweet poatoes.

First off, I'm DYING here at the reference to my "Hairy" yams!
And second, CRAPPPPPPPP!!!! Why the heck does the recipe call for YAMS if they really meant sweet potatos??? Man and those YAMS I bought were expensive too! Ugh. Now to find sweet potatoes that are called yams, but look like this pic instead... ok I'm confused again
THANK YOU! Good thing I asked - I would have been super P.O'd if I realized this on Thursday!

Well, the positive thing is, you don't need to use those hairy knock-offs of potatoes.
...i won't even tell u what i really think they look like..
...like a 108 year old man's shriveled, sagging....yams.

Yes, it's all your fault!
