Re: um, WTH - problem with my new car

It is possible that the car was dented at the dealership and repainted. Scary but it happens all the time and most of the time, the customer never knows. I used to work at two dealerships and there was a lot of cars that would get panels, or doors repaired and repainted without the customer even knowing.

Bring the car back. Tell them you want another car or have them repaint it to the exact color....of the rest of the car. If it was hit in the lot and resprayed.....they could get in a lot of trouble for not telling you the truth.

I am HOPING that it was just dinged in the lot or during transport. My thing is, if I had known / realized / been told this, I would have asked for a different car and that is exactly what I am going to do tomorrow

thanks again everyone Chat Icon

My husband is an automotive engineer and he used to supervise the paint department at a plant. He says that at the end of every day anywhere form 5-10 cars per shift get dented or scratched at the plant - so they will swap doors out. They probably swapped it from a different paint batch - hence the tonal differences.

It was probably done at the plant itself instead of the dealership - apparently it is very common.

Good luck!

Do a CARFAX report on the car now!

If they leased you a car that was in a wreck that they were passing as a NEW car, your lease contract should be VOID!

Yes - It's darker! I would totally suggest Carfax too

It probably wont show up on a car fax report. It will only show up there if it was claimed through the insurance company - and dealers will usually just call the customer and say they need another day before they can come to get it and then send it out to their body shop to get fixed ASAP.

Re: um, WTH - problem with my new car

My DH is a dealer (family owned) and has seen this a few times, even on new cars from the factory. He said the dealer should take it back and have it factory repainted, through warranty from GM (DH is a GM dealer BTW).

It's funny, my DH can spot a car that's been repainted and retouched from a mile away. Don't beat yourself up over it, he doesn't think they were trying to pull a fast one on you. Chances are the sunlight and lighting conditions made it hard to see at first.

Wow, I wouldn't have noticed it if you didn't point it out but yes you can see the difference!!

I hope they do the right thing here and replace it with a new car that's all 1 color!!

If it makes you feel better, they can definitely fix it and make it perfect.

The direct tv guy accidently dented the hood of DH's new car and it had to be replaced. It looks absolutely perfect now. I don't know how they do it but something about the colors all being computerized.

Hope it all works out!

I think they are doing what DH said they would do. The manager probably spoke with the Zone rep. DH was talking to me more about it before and he said sometimes dealers swap out cars too, so you probably will never find out where it happened. But I am glad its getting taken care of! Chat Icon
