Thanks for the reminder.
I'll try not to stare at the smudges.
I can't really comment unless I know how this was meant. Are you catholic? If so, and you receive ashes maybe it was just a joke?? I don't want to assume wrong.
If you aren't, and do not practice the faith and do not receive ashes...then this was a very very poor attempt at a "joke". It would be considered very ignorant and very much in poor taste.
I hope my first guess is right...

wow thats kind of sad to think of someone else's faith a "joke".
i saw her post on the pregnancy board that she feels misunderstood so she will no longer post but will lurk.
if you're lurking, i hope you see how many people you have offended with your very childish comment. it was highly uncalled for because it had nothing to do with Jess' question about lenten sacrifice. as Catholics, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of our preparation for our Lords death and rise to heaven. i take this time of year very much to heart.
why would you go out of your way to make a group of people feel badly when its obvious you know nothing about our faith?

Wow. I don't quite know what to say.
I don't consider myself overly religious, I mean I missed getting ashes last year...but never would I joke about someone elses faith. To her it may be smudges that she can try not to stare at but for catholics it means so much more...but I don't have to explain myself to those who understand.
I still can't get over the fact that adults can show such ignorance.

I'll try not to stare at the smudges.
See, this is the kind of thing that I am talking about on the Pregnancy board.
You say things like this and expect them not to be taken the wrong way?
Im a big girl. I'll take this one on my head.
In the spirit of peace and harmony and good gesture, please allow me to explain.
I believe in not ridiculing any religion, period. To me this is a holy time for you. You are recognizing his sacrifice by showing a sacrifice of your own. You mark yourselves as followers in ceremony with your ashes.
To stare, I think, is rude. Much like staring at a woman in Islam headdress.
So I really did not mean any disrespect. Actually the total opposite.
Thank you for reminding me. I'll try not to stare.

all I can really say is, how dare you? You have the right to your beliefs and I will not look down on you for them; however, why do you feel the need to put ours down? That is absolutely horrible.

There is a history of this poster making snarky comments about lent. In 2004 on LIW things got very heated.

Re: un WOW...tomorrow is Fat Tuesday...Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is this week!
I was not going to post because I know that is exactly what she wants, the attention, but I feel compelled to as a Catholic strong in my beliefs.
X, go ahead and stare hard and long, i will even take a picture of it for you. I am proud of my faith and so are the Catholics that wear the ashes on their head. I bet if you went up to one and asked what it is for, they will explain what the purpose is to you.
Please don't play coy. You know exactly what you wanted to start, and you succeeded. But you know what, all these ladies on here probably feel stronger in their beliefs being challenged by you, and for the feeling of unity, I thank you.
As for what Lent, i will am going to try to get more involved in charities in my community.

on one hand you're saying you don't believe in ridiculing any religion - that to stare would be rude - yet you thank the OP for reminding you, and that you'll try not to stare.
maybe i just shouldn't try to understand you....

Exactly my point form Pregnancy - if you TRULY meant no disrespect then you should really read your posts before you post them to see how they would possibly read to others.
And if you choose not to do that (either because you don't care or you want to get people riled up) then be prepared for the consequences on the boards.

Maybe I will just give up complaining about stuff I am not willing to do something to change.

I'm glad that someone has so much time to create drama. X-your comment was rude and uncalled for. So go and lurk and complain that people just don't understand you. And maybe once you have this child you'll grow up and learn how rude you are and how there are so many other things important in this life then a website where you can create drama and then complain that you're misunderstood. Have fun lurking, post if you want. I don't care. And I will wear my "smudge" very proudly and honestly I don't care if you or other people laugh at me. I am proud of my religion and I could give a FRA what people like you think about me.
