Im not even catholic and I thought this was rude! I didn't have any idea what the ashes were for until I read through this post, but I would never call them smudges! Thats a little uncalled for!

She needs to keep her rude comments to herself. I'm not one to get offended easily, but that comment was totally uncalled for. I'm not trying to start drama, but how could this girl post something like that & not expect anyone to call her out on it?

This is a total lack of respect.

Sorry Jess to hijack your thread, but this really ****** me off. Chat Icon

Well, I gave up Catholicism a few years ago... But I still try to give something up for lent, it's one of the few traditions that I try to hold on to.

Haven't quite figured out what though.

I'm not trying to start drama but Catholics are not the only ones who receive ashes. It is a Christian tradition. Instead of putting people's traditions down we need to educate people.

I was not going to post because I know that is exactly what she wants, the attention, but I feel compelled to as a Catholic strong in my beliefs.

X, go ahead and stare hard and long, i will even take a picture of it for you. I am proud of my faith and so are the Catholics that wear the ashes on their head. I bet if you went up to one and asked what it is for, they will explain what the purpose is to you.

Please don't play coy. You know exactly what you wanted to start, and you succeeded. But you know what, all these ladies on here probably feel stronger in their beliefs being challenged by you, and for the feeling of unity, I thank you.

As for what Lent, i will am going to try to get more involved in charities in my community.

Re: un WOW...tomorrow is Fat Tuesday...Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is this week!

here's the BEST part, and this needs to be said...

to call ashes "smudges" - well that's just a sign of ignorance - nothing I can do with it. And at the end of the day, as offensive as it is to Catholics - it's your right to feel how you feel and to say whatever you want to say.

However, I hope you realize you look like a hypocrite.

Need some examples?

Case #1: You started a thread on how the IO Digital commercial offended you because you felt it portrayed Hispanics in a stereotypical light.

Case #2: You started a thread on the relationship board, complaining about your in-laws, and in the course of that thread, noted that they might be against you because you are Hispanic and your DH is Asian.

So, it's obvious that you can spot things that are offensive to you. How can you then turn around and make comments that you KNOW are going to be offensive another group of people - whether or not you believe in organized religion.

This comment comes from the same person that read the series of books called Left Behind, that was written by 2 pastors and then complained that its was religious!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Good point - I was going to add the same! Many (though I am not positive about all) Protestant churches also give out ashes on Ash Wednesday.

that's exactly the point.

she DID do it to cause drama....not even to debate (which would be fine..I have no problem debating religion either, from an intellectual perspective)

but she just wanted a reaction.

like a little child that needs a hug, but asks for it by biting you.

it's sad. lame, and not worth anyone's time.

I understand WHY people wanted to say something...believe me I did too...but even her clarification was just...again I keep going back to lame...and Chat Icon

I am not here to entertain anyone with my (righteous) indignation. let her get her rocks off on someone else.

I try to add something that will make my life better during lent. (like being more patient/kind/caring or attending church more often).

I don't need Baby V damned like Mommy

Same here.

I don't really give anything up for Lent but add something to my life that for at the very least is somewhat of a "burden" on my life.

As I understand it, that's the point of giving something up. It's supposed to be a burden so that we have a notion of the suffering Jesus went through.

everyone- really- WWJD? turn the other cheek maybe?

There is a history of this poster making snarky comments about lent. In 2004 on LIW things got very heated.

I remember
I was there then too.
I just think to let this thread go from what the OP wanted to what X has turned it into is a shame and takes away from the time of year.

ITA. Like I said some people live for drama and complaining and playing the poor me card. I just hope that changes once a child is brought into this world.
