OMG, Skew!!!
I can't believe it! Thankfully you are all ok.
Now about the old man...I know he is old, but I don't like the way they are acting at all. His son/kids should be making amends to you, b/c YOU could have gotten killed, your pet, your family member, etc. You were innocent, in your house, he was the one who had the issues, whatever they were.
They should be worried you are going to sue them. After all, he didn't even go to seek medical care, and he damaged your house badly and really shook you up. His family should be doing right by YOU, esp since the man is ok. I am so glad you are OK. Although I feel somewhat badly for the driver ITA with Goobster that they should be kissing your a$$ right now. No offense to them but if they left stating they needed to seek immediate medical attention & then they were at the house 3 hours later, they are not being forthcoming. I feel badly, but they put lives in danger today.
I am sorry that you have to deal with the brunt of this.

Re: a car drove into my garage this morning
WOW. I'm so glad you and your family are okay and no one was IN that garage that he destroyed.
If the old man and his wife are too old or too senile to be taking care of this, the son should be. Why are you handling all this crap? Total BS.

You definitely shouldn't be handling all of this on your own. They should be taking care of it - and thankful that he didn't hurt anyone!!!

OMG, how awful, and how very, very sad. That man should NOT be driving, and this is exactly why I had the "talk" with my 73 year old, diabetic father about 3 months ago, in which I convinced him that he could no longer safely drive.
I'm so sorry

Re: a car drove into my garage this morning
As far as his off-putting reaction goes, I think I understand it a little more because of my Dad, who is 69. He's gotten a little crabby in his later years and when he is embarassed by something - mostly something that takes a hit to his pride - he gets defensive.
My father's fine motor skills in his right hand is affected - he can swing a golf club just fine but doing something like writing with a pen makes his hand shake uncontrollably. It's not Parkinsons, as he's had this for decades with no other signs and he's been tested.
But when he's on the phone and needs to take a phone number down, he gets embarassed to ask someone else to write for him. Or cut a tough piece of meat. Or even to put a key in a door and turn it.
When a big proud man like my Dad is brought to that point - to have to ask for someone else's help, especially a stranger's - his basic reaction takes over - sensitivity and defensiveness.
What this man did to your garage is a shame, and I think he should be retested to evaluate his driver's skills before being given back his license. Or not be permitted to drive at night. I feel very badly for you too and what you're going through.
But maybe I'm more apt to give the driver some more understanding because of my own Daddy. I hope everything goes smoothly with your claim and that it works out very, very soon.

I agree, having dealt with my own father's issues, and problems with his pride getting in the way, my heart feels for this man. But, I hold the family responsible, especially his wife and son. It's a disgrace that his family didn't intervene. If he is on medication and this obviously was not a suprise to them, they should have had a talk with him long before, intervened and convinced him to stop driving. They are lucky he only drove into a garage and didn't hurt anyone, instead of driving into a person, or killing himself.

Re: UPDATE a car drove into my garage this morning
that's so upsetting and inconvenient. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
the man's reaction is troublesome but if he is suffering from uncontrolled diabetes he may not be thinking straight (witnessed first hand) and cannot be forced to see a doctor. when his levels are fixed, he will be thinking more clearly. Hopefully, his family can convince him to go to the doctor.
If he is controlled this shouldn't happen.
If he has some other issues, maybe the family didn't want to face the facts about his cognition and they along with him are in denial.
Sounds very complicated and I'm sure very embarassing for him.
So sorry again about the damage and the aggravation. I hope you guys don't have more aggravation about getting all fixed. I also hope that the man gets some help and his family helps him make some decisions about his safety.

ALL necessary calls were made by myself and officer; garage supported, car towed and garage boarded. it was ME that called THEIR insurance company and received a claim number.
Your homeowners should be covering your garage..not his company. Check with that.
As for what happened, Sorry and happy to hear no one was HURT!!
Terrible thing to happen and deal with.
