Re: *spoke to vet*SPR-not sure where to put this but really need advice/to vent
As a parent of a diabetic cat, two non diabetic cats and a kiddo.. i totally understand.
You sorta learn to live with the schedule.
Still I agree with the idea of taking him to the Vet. It best for HIM.
When our buddy was still working out his dosage (injections 2X daily) he would pee and it drove me nuts. I've scrubed so many floors! Once he got his insulin regulated it was much better.
We left him in NY and I hear he's relapsing
I feel for the doggie and for your family. I think the Vet is the best choice.

i would be taking the dog to the vet and having them care for him - and when the ILs call tell them that you could not handle caring for the dog, that he needed to be treated for the diabetes, and he is being boarded at the vet.
that was very irresponsible of them to go before he was being treated and they knew he was doing better.
I agree..... by the way you describe it: eating and puking drinking lots of water it sounds like he is going into DKA which can lead to renal failure and death in a matter of hours. At this point he is probably going to HAVE to stay at the vet for a few days to get this under control. Most likely just a shot of insulin or 2 is not going to work until this is fully managed!
ITA! and it is so sad. This is animal abuse!(not on your part but the IL's) I would totally take him to the vet.

Can you board the dog at the vet until they come back. That way the vet could monitor his condition and he woulnd't be home alone. I would be nervous to let him stay at home. He could have a seizure or something. Poor guy.

Re: *spoke to vet*SPR-not sure where to put this but really need advice/to vent
Ok DH got in contact with FIL. He was driving to see the grandfather through mountains and junk so they kept cutting in and out.
We went to their house and picked up the perscriptions, dropped them off at CVS etc. I just picked up everything and came home.
I was able to get some pee and I tested it. I have no idea what the results are supposed to mean but I am assuming it is BAD because the colors for both the keytones and glucose were pretty dark.
I am waiting to hear back from DH and the vet.

I think you are right...I remember from when I had gestational diabetes that dark ketones was a bad thing and same for glucose (he is spilling both in his urine).

Re: **UPDATE pg 2**SPR-not sure where to put this but really need advice/to vent
Ok DH is coming home from work. Apparentl vet is very concerned and wants to see him asap and will probably have to keep him.
FIL is now at Grandfathers house and is in contact with DH. Im sure he feels awful.
In their defense....he really wasnt this bad when they left, and he had the same symptoms for a while before they went to the vet so I guess the vet thought it was mild enough that they could wait 2 weeks and they literally plan this vacation a year in advance every year. He was eating and just drinking a lot of water. I just watched him two weeks ago and he seemed a little sluggish but was not like this at all. As much as I am annoyed, Im sure FIL is really really sad this is happening and feels awful he cant run right home. I know I would if it were fred :(
I will talk to DH about seeing if the vet thinks we can handle the injections. The problem is collecting the pee cause I have the baby and fred here too, so if maybe DH can get the pee before work and after work, I am sure I could do the injection...I injected MYSELF in the stomach many times a day to concieve Sadie, it cant be that much more difficult on a dog.

Hey.. Thanks for asking.
He is still in the "hospital". Yesterday they said he had pancritis(sp?) but was doing a little better. Today they were able to take him for a little walk and feed him so real food.
We are pretty sure that the vet will keep him until ILs get back, but it's day by day for now. It is possible they will release him from the "hospital" tomorrow or Monday.
We all think it would be better for them to board him so they can get his insulin dosage under control before he goes home. It will be much easier for his parents then.
ETS: IL's are distruaght and feel completely awful about all of this. They did not understand the severity of his condition and since he really wasnt symptomatic before they left, they thought he would be fine. They have been calling us and the vet several times a day.

Re: **UPDATE AGAIN page 2**SPR-not sure where to put this but really need advice/to vent
omgosh I am sorry you are going through this ~ sounds like oliver is quite sick ~ I don't think your mil should have waited to give him his injections. I would stick it out and keep him at your house. (if you can do it) It sounds like it might be harder to go back and forth to your il's house.
I just saw the post on oliver being in the hospital ~ I hope he gets better soon! Sorry to hear he was getting worse while il's were gone...
