UPDATE and ??? in 1st Post - Shirt dress for wedding at the Old Field Club?
Would a shirt dress be acceptable for an evening wedding at the Old Field Club?
I know the location because I spent many years at West Meadow Beach, but I've never actually been in the Old Field Club (turning around in the parking lot doesn't count. )
The wedding is at the end of August and I was going to have one made. The cut would be similar to this: The above is linen, but the dress I was thinking of would be cotton, pink/white stripes, like below: with the collar and cuffs being white (I haven't decided if I want the button placket white or in the striped fabric.)
Or do I need to start shopping for something a bit dressier?
********************************************* UPDATE: Ok, so I ended up getting turned off on the owner/designer because of his poor customer service and decided not to have him make me a dress (or anything else for that matter.)
Is this acceptable for the OFC wedding?

I don't think so
it's like a regular catering hall inside - I wore a black cocktail dress to our friends wedding there
that dress says lunch after the beach

No, I really don't think it's appropriate either. Expecially since you said it's cotton.

The place is that fancy? Crap...back to the drawing board.
FWIW, the dress is more like the attached pic. Image Attachment(s):

I don't know if I agree with that. I've been to beach and waterfront weddings where that style dress would be appropriate. I think location definitely plays a role in attire.

It's not a chambray type cotton, but a more fine fabric (Sea Island cotton), like in men's dress shirts (where there's a sheen to it.)

That's sounds really pretty, but more like a day dress even though the 2nd pciture you posted is a little dresier, with the fuller skirt.
ETA-Did you look at the pictures on the website? You can kind of see what some people are wearing in some of the pictures.

i dont know if i agree, i think if i saw someone in a shirt dress with a belt at a wedding, id think they looked too casual. even a beach wedding, i think a sundress is is more appropriate
that dress looks like a casual friday work dress.
i really like the dress though- but just not for a wedding

Yeah, I looked at the photos, but you can't see much. From the little that I can see, I think the dress would be acceptable, especially with high heels and dressier accessories. I also thought my DH would be fine in chino styled dress slacks w/a sport jacket. I don't think that location warrants a dress suit.
I guess the best way to describe my thoughts about attire are J Crew wedding. The location looks like the backdrop for a J Crew wedding photo shoot. Does that make sense?! Although it's an evening wedding, it will still be daylight at 5pm when it starts and there's somewhat of a casual element about the location. Not that that means my thoughts are right, but that's just where my head is at.

Or a casual Wednesday because both your bosses are out of town...
Seriously I'm wearing almost that exact dress (the 2nd one posted) today except with shorter sleeves and in black & white stripe.
I'd never wear it to a wedding, no matter how casual.

Re: Shirt dress for wedding at the Old Field Club?
I JUST got married at the Old Field Club 3 weeks ago.
Sat night wedding.
That dress is DEFINITELY appropriate.
OFC is totally laid back and I think it's perfectly fine for a wedding there.

You hit the nail on the head.
It is a jcrewish kind of place.
Don't get me wrong - some people wore suits and ties and cocktail dresses, but it's definitely more casual than the typical LI catering hall...

I wouldnt.
I always dress up for a wedding, no matter where it is. I'd rather be too dressed up than under dressed.

I'd agree with the majority here, I love the dress but wouldn't wear for a Sat. night wedding.

Yeah, I see where you're going with that. The reception starts at 5, or the does that include the ceremony?
It does look like a JCrew backdrop, but I still associate that sort of setting with a day ceremony & reception. How well do you know the couple? Are they laid back? If so, it might be fine, especially since SupaBonBon said it would have been fine for hers. I just tend to err on the side of overdressed, because I was a little offended that some ladies wore skirts (some with twinsets) & at least 1 man was tie-less at my Saturday night wedding. I' m just petty like that though!

Re: Shirt dress for wedding at the Old Field Club?
Would your dress have sleeves? I think a SLEEVELESS shirtdress with a full skirt and a WIDE belt of the same fabric would be nice for an evening wedding at OFC.
I think if the shirt dress has any sort of sleeves it would look too casual. And if it has a grosgrain or webbed belt it would look too casual. A fabric belt that would be wide and either have a pretty buckle (maybe fabric covered) or would tie like a sash might be nice.
Definitely with some sort of strappy sandal and pretty accessories and if you anticipate being cold, bring a wrap.
Since you are thinking of having it made, maybe have it made like a halter neck shirt dress. I have seen J Crew do something like that where they took a shirt and made it a halter with a button down front and collar. That way it would have an open back and look a little dressier.
