update: cat owners I need help....

My cat (who I've had for 2 years) is suddenly acting out aggressively towards myself and DH. This is the 2nd time this has happened, the first time was in May and after weeks of tip-toeing around her she began to calm down. She always gets very anxious if another animal comes near the house. Last night a stray cat was in our back window, Cha-Cha got aggreviated but was ok. After about 1/2 hour she started hissing and DH and I, she tried to attack us and urinated on the floor...she's been anxious and overly territorial all morning. We don't know what to do, I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant and can't have this once our child is born. My question is, does anyone know how I can lure her into her cage (food is not working and she does not trust either of us), and is there anywhere that will take her (beside North Shore) that's a no kill shelter? also is there any shelters that will come to the house and get her? I really don't think we can get her in her cage.

We are devastated, she is our baby, I'm so heart broken and cannot believe this is happening on Christmas Eve. If you have any suggestions please let me know. TIA!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: cat owners I need help....

Is somehting out of the ordinary happening in the house? It may not seem different to you, but to her it might.. Before getting rid of her, call the vet maybe you can get a tranquilzer for her. Maybe she is sick?
I get upset, not trying to flame you , but I just adopted a cat that is the most loveable animal that was just dumped at the shelter becuase it's owners did not want him anymore. Chat Icon becuase of this, my poor kitty is petrified to go into the carrier, and it has taken almost 4 months of being in my home to get him to trust us and to come around.
PLEASE CALL THE VET !!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish you a lot of luck.

Nothing out of the ordinary is happening...the last time this happened we brought her to the vet and they said that she is just a territorial cat (that her type of cat is aggressive by nature which was never told to us when we adopted her) and there's nothing that can be done. They can put her on prozac but there's no guarantee on how she will respond. Some cats get more aggressive from it. The vet doesn't open until 9 so I'm waiting until then, but she is very aggressive she scratched my DH very badly last time-he has a scar, and this time she won't even calm down with food. I'm completely devastated, she was the princess in our house, I spoil her like crazy and adore her. I would never give her up unless I felt it was my only option, I'm crying hysterically as I type this, but I can't be worried that she will do this again when I have a newborn. I also have to be realistic and protect my child. Thank you for your advice I wish you all the luck with your new kitty.

Good luck with the situation. The shelter I got my cat from is Little Shelter, they are a no kill shelter. I hope it does not come down to this. Chat Icon

I would take her to the vet - or at least call them for advice. If she is sick or in pain perhaps she would act that way.

My boss told me that her cats acted out (by peeing around the house) when they moved to a new house and when the baby came along. But once they got used to things, they were fine.

If you are afraid, try keeping her in the bathroom or a small room for a while until you figure out whats wrong.

it would be terrible to get rid of her before you know whats wrong.

If this were my situation, I would call the vet and take her there. It is quite possible that she is ill. "Giving her away" is a drastic solution, IMO.

Re: cat owners I need help....

Don't just give her away just yet. Bring her to the vet. Also try Feliway. You plug it in and they calm down by releasing natural pheromones. I tried this with my cat. She was sad at times, in a mood and pees on carpets. I got rid of the carpet that she liked and used the Feliway. Her mood has changed by 1000%.

I think the stray cat is stressing her out. There are also things you can keep outside to keep strays away.

What kind of cat is it that it is aggressive?

Re: cat owners I need help....

Update:
Thank you everyone for your responses. I took Cha Cha to the vet this morning they are aware of her history and made the decision to put her down. She was still attacking and aggressive after 24 hours. It was a very hard decision for us to make, and maybe many of you won't agree with it, but we loved her very much and just wanted her to be safe and happy. The doctor explained that sometimes animals turn, maybe a chemical imbalance and unfortunately there's no rationalizing with animals. I didn't want to put her down, but she was a serious danger to herself and us.
I know that I may recieve some backlash from our decision, but know that I loved my pet like a child and cannot explain how heart broken I am. So please before you choose to judge my decision understand that as her owners and her vet, we made the decision. I have only given you a small portion of our issues with her. So please don't judge. Please give your pets kiss and a hug and enjoy them, because I wasn't able to say goodbye...

Things are really that bad that you are already trying to "lure" her into her cage? How long is this going on? Is the cat neutered? Sounds to me the cat is not, b/c cats who are not neutered may act this way when other animals come around.

Sounds like you are giving up on her so quickly. Are the two of you acting different? Have you tried taking her to the vet to see what is wrong? I would take the cat the vet. Giving away or esp putting a beloved pet in a shelter is always the last resort. After ALL other options and possibilites are explored. Pets are like children, they can have issues but that doesn't mean we just give them up b/c they have issues that come up.

Please try to figure out what is going on and if you love your kitty, do everything you can before talking about giving the cat away, esp placing it in a shelter.

:) God bless you for being patient with one of God's creatures and giiving this baby a home. And for realizing pets can sometimes have issues that we must work with and help with, too, if we are dedicated pet owners.

This has been going on for 9 months, things took a turn for the worst in May and have gotten progressively worse since then. I only gave everyone a brief history of what happened yesterday...of course I was taking her to the vet, that was why I was trying to get her into her carrier. Back in May they wanted to put her on Prozac and I wouldn't allow it b/c there was no guarantee that it would help her, in fact the vets were concerned that it would make her worse.
There is an update above your post, Cha-Cha was put down this morning.

Wow, I can't believe this. I would only hope if the vet agreed to this, the cat must have been in a bad state.

What was so bad that the cat needed to be put down. Rudy has his moments... we got a dog trainer. Sometimes we say NO in a loud voice and he just turns and walks away.

I couldn't imagine putting him down

i can't believe that a vet would agree to put a cat that had only recently been showing signs of aggression.

i am not judging but you say you are 7 1/2 months pregnant, i am willing to bet that your cat knew something was going on and felt threatened.

i would rather you have given the cat to a no kill shelter so she could have been adopted by a new family who was more willing to work with her.

I'm not judging - but I can't believe any vet would do that.

My brother and sister traveled home for xmas, and both brought their cats over my mom's house to stay. Everyones cats were acting weird (hissing and growling) because they were confused. To put a cat down before you even run a blood test is really odd to me.

This is very sad....

I have an extreamly aggressive cat...I've had her since she was 7 weeks old, and she is now almost 7 years old. We had an extreamly difficult time with her shortly after we got married and moved into our house. I took her to the vet, and they offered me some options. I also talked to the woman that pet sits for us when we go away, and at her suggestion, I tried Feliaway and some other natural products. I made DH pay more attention to her, and she has calmed down so much. She does have her moments, and when she does they are really bad. She has been this way for 7 years, and never once has giving her up crossed my mind.

I would almost bet you being pregnant has something to do with her behavior. Cats are very intune to change and most don't handle change without some kind of stress.

I really cannot believe a vet would suggest putting an animal down that wasn't ill and suffering. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: update: cat owners I need help....

North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) will not take the cat. They do not take back half the animals they adopted out and many are euthanized at municipal shelters. Most people think NSALA is the greatest...really should look into their practices.

Private non profit organizations will not take her, and the only organization that would come and pick her up would be animal control and that would not be good.

Definitely sounds like a behavioral issue. I suggest you take her to the vet for an exam..possibly she could also be ill.

Re: update: cat owners I need help....

I have been very upset that a vet would do this, and I almost did not reply on this thread. But I am very saddened by the turn of events. I am sorry about the cat, I truly am, but to do this is horrible and disgusting and any vet would not make there minds up of a client's animal, it is the owner who ultimately made this decision. Hey, what ever you choose is your business, but animals cannot talk, and it is pathetic and sick that you would even do this to an innocent animal. Animals need to be given a chance to succeed in life as animals ,maybe not your house , but maybe someone elses home.

Re: update: cat owners I need help....

wow - I was just going to respond before reading your updated post - that when I was in the last trimester of my pregnancy my dog was acting out like crazy towards me --- I swear - I would lay in bed crying bc she would be attacking me.

That all stopped once I had the baby.

I'm shocked that a vet would be the cat down for this - so I'm assuming there is ALOT more to the story then we know.
