Re: update: cat owners I need help....

wow. I was going to suggest that perhaps you being pregnant was the reason for the cat's aggression since animals are very in tune with these sorts of things. But after reading the whole thread and the update, I guess there was more going on than just scratching because I can't believe any vet would turn to euthanasia just for that.

Okay, I'm one of the biggest pet lovers there are...but obviously she had major ongoing issues with this cat.
The vet decided to euthanize the cat and she stated that she has had this cat for seven years.
I'm sure she is heartbroken and doesn't need to have people revisiting and answering this thread to complain about the fact that she put her cat down.

I believe the owner had the cat for 2 years.

This is probably the most disturbing post I have read on the pets board!

When we got our 2nd cat he was obviously the alpha male and we had serious problems with him "marking" our furniture and bedding. He got out of that phase after a few months and many visits to the vet only for it to reappear, only worse, when we moved a year later. We tried everything including tranquilizers (which made him worse), but we persevered even though I felt like I needed the tranquilizers myself sometimes. We evenually got his personality somewhat under control although he still takes swipes at the other, much bigger, cat.

Obviously the reason he was given up to the shelter was because of his "orneriness" and there is no way I could have put him through life in a shelter again - or worse.Chat Icon

Re: update: cat owners I need help....

I posted that I've had my cat for 7 years, the OP had her cat for 2 years.

I do hope that there is more to the story then what was posted. Because to me, it's most disturbing that the vet would recommend that as a solution.

All the years I've asked my vet about Shadow's behavorial issues, he has NEVER suggested putting her down because of it.

I have been very upset that a vet would do this, and I almost did not reply on this thread. But I am very saddened by the turn of events. I am sorry about the cat, I truly am, but to do this is horrible and disgusting and any vet would not make there minds up of a client's animal, it is the owner who ultimately made this decision. Hey, what ever you choose is your business, but animals cannot talk, and it is pathetic and sick that you would even do this to an innocent animal. Animals need to be given a chance to succeed in life as animals ,maybe not your house , but maybe someone elses home.

I agree, how sad.....

i can't believe that a vet would agree to put a cat that had only recently been showing signs of aggression.

i am not judging but you say you are 7 1/2 months pregnant, i am willing to bet that your cat knew something was going on and felt threatened.

i would rather you have given the cat to a no kill shelter so she could have been adopted by a new family who was more willing to work with her.

Well pray you never have to give up Rudy because they will not take him back and most end up at the municipal shelter a mile down the road. It was a sorry situation about Katrina but the fact of the matter is we have thousands in our own backyards that need to be saved.

North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) will not take the cat. They do not take back half the animals they adopted out and many are euthanized at municipal shelters. Most people think NSALA is the greatest...really should look into their practices.

Amen! I got my Sparky from there and their records were wrong and nearly didnt let us have him. Then 6 months later I had to put him down from a violent disease that was causing him to starve to death. My house was quarantined for two months and NSAL even with a death certficate copy in hand was rude and actually accused me of killing the pet. I will NEVER adobt there again, if I can help it. They were rude, heartless and it was so painful for me to put my kitten to sleep just 9 months into this life and only 6 months with us. Those ba$tard. Chat Icon

(no Im really not this upset, i guess, but a year and a half later and I must admit it still hurts a lot!)

Update:I know that I may recieve some backlash from our decision, but know that I loved my pet like a child and cannot explain how heart broken I am.

I know the pain personally. We weren't able to say goodbye either to our kitten when we put him down. It was devastating. We were only able to say goodbye to the body later the next day and I have never heard my hubby cry so hard. After your baby is born maybe you guys may choose to adopt a new kitten. Maybe this was meant to be and I know your kitty and mine are at ease (healthy and playful) and happy where they are now and both appreciate the time we gave them, safe homes and the love we had. Just remember how much love you gave and know your kitty was grateful.
