UPDATE I CANT EVEN BELIEVE! Im so upset!
My Ex Husband and I had moved all of our belongings into a storage unit a few years back. Long story short we had to move all of our stuff in a short period of time and opted for the unit. During the time that we had our stuff there we got divorced. Since then I have begged him to let me in to get my stuff. He would make up excuses or we would settle on a time and date and he would never show up. He wouldnt give me the key to go in by myself because I guess he was afraid that I would take his stuff. In fact the only things that I wanted were my deceased mothers belongings including pictures and things that my mom had given me to hold onto for my sister and brother when they got older, and my memoirs of working on the WTC Recovery Project. He basically held my stuff hostage and there was nothing the storage center could do because my name was not on the lease. The lady at the center told me that she understood my position and promised me that if the unit ever went to auction that she would call me first to retrieve my belongings.
Fast forward to today where the lady from the center called me to tell me that he defaulted on the unit and that everything went up for auction-MONTHS AGO! The only thing she was legally allowed to salvage for me was a box of pictures.
I cant stop crying. I dont know who to be mad at more. My Ex DH for being such a piece of s#!t, the storage lady for telling me that she would help me and then didnt, or myself for not calling the Sherriffs to get my stuff back.
What am I supposed to tell my 15 yr old brother when he asks me for the things that he knows our mother left to him or when my sister wants to walk down the ailse and she cant wear our mothers veil? I am so devastated I dont know what to do.
Any suggestions? Sorry so long.
UPDATE:
So I go to the storage facility to pick up the box of pictures and to try to get some info on who bought the unit or where my stuff was auctioned off to. The lady hands me a small box with my name on it. Inside there was only pics of a family member who was ex-communicated from my family because he was an animal that couldnt keep his hands off of little girls. I never thought he could be that cruel. I asked her where the rest of my pics and things were and she said that when it was sold off, the only thing in there was this box and a few old fish tanks. Nothing that I had described to her was there. That could only mean that he disposed of my belongings long before he defaulted on the unit.
I am so heartbroken. I just dont know what else to do except sit and cry.

 OMG, I am so sorry!
Do they have any records of where the stuff went? Does it really go to an auction, and if so I'm sure they keep a record of who got what.

's - The same exact thing happened to me with my ex husband... except that my things were in his apartment that he failed to pay rent on (after I stopped paying it for him!). His landlord finally got tired of him and out everything on the street. I was later told that people were like vultures and took everything. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about it. I spoke to my attorney after it happened - There wasn't anything I could do.

Does the storage facility have any information on who bought the unit?
I believe they aution off the whole unit. Not individual pieces. MAYBE they have a record of who puchased it.
If so, can you see if they will contact the buyer with your name?
It may be worth a shot.

I hate to say this, but I don't think their is anything you can do. My mother works for a moving and storage company and they have auctions 2x a year. I know in her company the people have to be in default for months before they sell it and they are legally allowed to do so. Your ex should have told you, what a jerk!!!

You likely have no recourse against the storage company, it's in the contracts that they can sell the contents if you stop paying for the box. Only recourse would be against your ex and it sounds like these were priceless items, probably no money will replace.
