Update! My $39 was refunded! - I am so annoyed!!! You have to keep so on top of things!
I just went to go pay my credit card balance online. This is the cc that I use for basically just gas each month. My credit limit is $600.
Well, this month I used it to buy wine when we went went tasting for our Anniversary, plus gas, plus one Vet visit.
I went above my limit, but instead of credit card being denied I was charge a overlimit fee of $39 dollars.
I have never honestly heard of this, why wasn't my card just denied?
I would have used a different card.
I have never been late and I always pay the full amount. So, I paid $668 just now.
I emailed the credit card co to ask them about the fee. They said they won't credit me the fee.
I emailed them back and said if I don't get the $39 credited to my card, I am cancelling my credit card.
Am I wrong? Or is this ridiculous?

I have seen that in many CC's terms of agreements...

I think they consider it a courtesy to not refuse the charge, but they penalize you for it. I wonder if you could put a stop on your account for the absolute credit limit? Or like you said, take your business elsewhere.
I have a similar card - low credit limit that's used for incidentals. I went over the limit by ONE CENT and they charged an over the limit fee. They did reverse it for me though.

Tara, that's happened to me, but I've gotten it back. Usually the first time they credit you. That is a low amount though...I'd also request it to be raised. Even if you don't max it out every month, it's nice to have a higher limit in case of emergencies. I'd call again. Get someone on the phone. Good luck!

The fee is probably stated in the terms of agreement on the card, I've seen this before on credit cards I've had

Actually, no I have awesome credit. The limit on that card was over $15,000 and I wanted it lowered to $600 because all I use the card for is gas.
I have another card tucked away with a high limit just in case.

that's BS about the charge, especially since YOU asked for the limit to be lowered. I would fight it.

I went over by $68, but that was a fluke. I usually don't buy 15 bottles of wine I went a little overboard when we went wine tasting!

I would tell them that you've been a loyal customer for __ # of years and that if they don't remove the charge, you are cancelling the card.

Don't worry I am not offended or anything. I offered the information, actually I vented the information.
No worries!

Re: I am so annoyed!!! You have to keep so on top of things!
they do it so they can charge you more.
I would just keep a tab of what you are charging.
i would NEVER have LOWERED a limit on my card. one of the components to your FICO score is your % revloving available.
So say you had a $15K limit on that card and a $15K limit on your other one.
and for arguements sake, you had $10K in charges outstanding.
so your availability is 66%.
now you made the other card $1k limit (made it easy for math reasons, lol), now your availability is only 37.5%. without your outstanding balance changing.
I can understand why you would want to lower your limit (so you dont use it) but apart of having credit is having control not to use it!

I totally see your point and I do agree, but the main reason I did this was because last year I used one of credit cards to purchase a Bridemaids dress via netbride.com and my cc number was stolen by an ex-employee and I had alot of charges that weren't mine and I had to fight them.
Everything worked out, but after that I lowered all limits because of the hassle, energy and frustration I went through.
My score did lower a bit, but to be honest all my major purchases are purchased (house - mortgage, car, etc...) and the mortgage is in my name, so that is always paid on time and in full and over sometimes, so that helped build my score back up.

I totally understand! thats awful. CC and Identity theft is way too common these days.
on your credit report - you can flag that on any new credit requests - they have to contact you. So if (god forbid) someone tries to apply for a CC in your name, the bank pulls your credit, sees the message, and calls the number YOU provided to the credit bureau - so you can catch them in the act.

This is really good know. Thank you. I will be doing this!
eta: also the reason why I use just this card for gas and lowered it to a lower amount is I HATE pumping gas!
I avoid the self serve stations and always go to full serve.
So the gas attendant is handling that credit card only. I hate the germs on the gas pump !

I totally agree with you - they should have just declined the charge and then you wouldn't have the fees. If they were "courteous" enough to let the charge go through, why can't they be "courteous" enough to waive the overage fee? I had so many problems with my c/c I wrote them a letter and it still did nothing. We are all peanuts in the big world of credit card companies and they like to take our money and not give a hoot about us personally.

Re: I am so annoyed!!! You have to keep so on top of things!
I had the same thing happen with one of my credit cards! I was sure that if I hit my limit the card would be declines, instead they let me complete the purcahse and then they charged me £12 (around $20) and this was on a Virgin Money Credit Card! Richard Branson shocked me with this one...
Surely NO ONE reads the fine print on cards, and I think its a totally unfair charge. I called them and told them I wasn't going to pay it, but they couldn't do anything. Its one of the cards that I am tarting on (moving my balance around to 0% cards when good offers come up) so I just kept it there!

I've heard of that, but if you have such a good record with them, they should refund the fee for you.
