Update... Nervous about HSG!
I have my HSG scheduled for next week. I am so nervous b/c I have heard horror stories about the pain. My RE suspects a blocked tube because there is an area of fluid on the left side near ovary seen on sono. Any recommendations aside from taking Ibuprofen before the test? Thanks
So I had the HSG this afternoon with Dr. Palter... it was quick and painless and Dr. Palter performed the test himself @ Zwanger-Pesiri in Plainview. I had a mild cramp when the saline went in but otherwise it was fine. I stressed for no reason at all. The good news is that I have no blockages. Meeting with Dr. Palter on Tues to discuss the gameplan for getting me pregnant!

Nervous about HSG!
I don't have any experience with this, but from what be read on here, it just feels like cramping for a few minutes. Definetly take Motrin or some type of pain reviver beforehand. Best of luck!!

Nervous about HSG!
I had an HSG back in April and I took i800mg of Motrin about an hour before I wen. It was a decent amount of cramping. But not TOO bad. Just try your best to breather through the pain. And keep in mind the end goal... It will be over before you know it. Good luck

Re: Nervous about HSG!
I had one and although it was not comfortable, it was over very quickly. Take something before the procedure and you will be fine

Re: Nervous about HSG!
I'll be honest...when I had the HSG and had a lot of cramping. The procedure itself wasn't awful, but it lasted for about 25 minutes afterwards and was just very uncomfortable. They had me sit in the waiting room for a minimum of 30 minutes until I felt ok and that was the hardest part. I think if I were lying down it wouldn't have been so bad. I had DH run out and get me a juice with sugar and for whatever reason that made me feel better. I'd take a juice with you. It hurt for me, and I had no blockages. But there was a girl ahead of me who literally had no pain at all. Everyone is different, so I wouldn't freak out. It's bearable and you'll get through it.
All that being said...It was all worth it b/c I got my BFP that cycle! They say you have increased fertility for the next 3 cycles after an HSG. So for me, I'd have done it 10 times just so I could have my LO.

Nervous about HSG!
I was advised to take 2 Advil two hours before and two Advil an hour before. I also took a Xanax an hour before. It was not as bad as I had imagined at all!!!!!! Cramping when contrast was injected, but it was a quick procedure :)
Good Luck :)

Re: Nervous about HSG!
Sorry to crash but I had two sonograms w my ob and they were both normal. If I had that same problem would an ob/gyn be able to detect that or does the re do a more in depth Sono?

For me it hurt a lot. I forgot to take extra strength Tylenol before but took right after and it only brushed the surface. The procedure is very quick though. I went home afterwards and relaxed. I had a dip in my uterus and a possible block tube. Hope everything turns out positive for you!!

Nervous about HSG!
Just breathe and pray it goes quick- that's pretty much what I did! It wasn't so bad. I only had 2 really bad cramps. It was just mostly uncomfortable. I think if you breathe and try to stay relaxed it makes it easier. It's very quick though.

You do need an hsg to determine blockages. Most OB's don't do it, but they recommend it when you haven't conceived past a certain point. Instead, if you go to an RE right off the bat, you will have all of the testing done there instead of months of trying/guesswork = agony. Good Luck!

this exam wasn't bad fo rme at all. it was over in less than 10 minutes. i had some cramping, nothing worse than what you would get during AF. afterwards i took 3 advil and was fine. bring a pad, you'll be leaking the iodine they inject you with for a few hours afterwards

It is different for everyone, but for the most part it isn't painful or unbearable by any means. The nurses in the room who are assisting the doctor make you feel very comfortable, even though it can be messy and icky. Afterwards, I had some cramping and spotting/leaking and I took it easy the rest of the day. Many women go to work w/no problem afterwards. The cramping was mild, like AF cramps. good luck

Re: Nervous about HSG!
Don't be nervous about the HSG it really isn't that bad. I was so nervous that I wouldn't be able to take it. The only time I had cramping was when they put the dye in. It was very cramping and gassy. After the test they explained everything to me. Turned out I have a blocked right tube. It's over in amount of just a few min. Just try to relax the more you tense those muscles the worse it's gonna feel...trust me I've been there!!! FM if you have any questions!!

Nervous about HSG!
I'm going to share my HSG story but I don't want to make you more anxious than you already are.
I wasn't nervous at all about the test. I went in and had the procedure. It was not painful at all and after it was done the doctor showed me the video and that my tubes were clear. I then went to work. About 2 hours after the procedure I had a lot of cramping. So much so that it was hard to stand up straight. I also had a fever. I left work and went home to lay down. After sleeping for a few hours I was fine and my fever went away. I called the doctor and he said that I most likely had a reaction to the dye.
But I will say that I got my BFP within 2 cycles of having the procedure.

Re: Nervous about HSG!
My RE prescribed an antibiotic to prevent infection and recommended 800 mg of Ibuprofen to be taken an hour before the procedure.

Yes I took this as well. And Yes you will get some cramping later but it will be more severe if you did have a reaction to the dye. I hope you get awesome results and you are pregnant soon!!

Ok I hear you. Thank you. I just wanted to know if the ob sonogram would detect that fluid buildup the original poster mentioned. Was that why an hsg was recommended?

Re: Nervous about HSG!
I think I ended up making mine more painful then maybe it is because I read a lot about how painful it is before hand. Don't get me wrong, it was realllly painful for me (I don't deal well with any kind of pain), so I literally cried the whole time. But part of that was just the emotions going through me with all the tests. I ended up staying home the rest of the day and had cramps for a good 2-3 days afterwards as well as some light bleeding. My least favorite test for sure, but everyone reacts differently. Hope it goes well for you!
