I paid for the session, which also included a choice of a few proofs....
I got the higher level package that also included the high-res CD as well as rights to reprint. I spent about 700-800 TOTAL, and the higher package includes a coffee table book with a choice of 25 images, a proof book with ALL pics and some blow-ups.
Have you reached out to the photographer yet....if I went INDIVIDUAL, it would cose me 20-25 an image, but there are usually packages...
I have emailed and called her. Good thing I posted on here first because my tone would have been really different if I emailed her before I knew this was standard.
We are reasonable and fair people.
Worst case scenario - we buy our favorite 10 pics or so from the website for ~$350.
If she is a seasoned photographer, she HAS to have package options. It just wouldn't make sense if she didn't. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I'm sorry the photographer's policy was not made clear to you. DH is sort of "in the industry" so we know to ask. For DS' newborn shoot she charged us I believe $150 for the shoot, the online gallery where we could download the photos, and a CD including all the rights.

Re: Photographer not releasing our pictures (long)
When you generally work with a photographer the proofs are the property of the photographer unless they notify you or an agreement is made in advance. I think we get spoiled on this site b.c a lot of the amazing photographers don't keep the rights.
I think most wedding photographers do this - and when they were doing film - they would even charge a lot of money to give you the negatives.
That is why many places charge you for a CD of the photos - but then you own the rights and can print them anywhere. That is why it is important to always ask first - will I get a copy of all the photos or do I have to buy a CD etc. Especially it is important to ask if they don't charge a lot of money up front b.c they then expect to make money off the sales of the prints.

Wow, i must say I am really surprised at some of the prices on here. I use an AMAZING photgrapher who I have been using for years (before the "craze" started on lif for that same style of photography).
She charges us $350 and we get the CD and pics and have the rights to all the pictures. We do not order enlargements through her.
I don't want to start any drama (believe me) but it seems a little bit outrageous to me to charge $1000. So the per hour rate is higher than many doctors and lawyers get for a non-professionally trained photographer? In college my photography prof. exhibited his work at The Whitney so I could see HIM charging prices upwards of that.
I am sorry- I am just really surprised

You may be mistaking the "per hour" rate as time spent at the photo session. Editing time is added in, plus travel (if they don't charge for travel), if you add in overhead (camera equipment, insurance, business taxes, etc), it all adds up. No one goes into business to lose money.
This is a good article that explains it: Why Custom Photography Costs More
As far as the prices, if someone feels it's worth it, they pay for it. If not there are plenty of less expensive photographers out there.
To the OP: As everyone said, it's pretty standard for photographers to not release the digital photos. The session fee usually only includes the photographer's time & talent. I'm sorry you had a miscommunication with your photographer.

Thank you for adding this...I was going to say, our photographer spent 3hrs with us, traveled and I'm sure spent time editing. We really loved working with her, and while we did go a cheaper route for Christmas pics, etc...I am happy with my decision.

Thanks a really great article Barb, thanks for sharing!
To the OP, ALWAYS, ALWAYS make sure you have a contract and you know what you are signing with anything. Hopefully your photographer has some packages when you can get some really nice professional prints and some of your favorite files!
Can't wait to see pictures of your little man when you do get everything resolved, It's been soo long since I've seen him!

I completely understand photography - I minored in it in college back when we actually had to develop and print our own stuff. That said **I** still feel it is outrageous. Which is fine, we all have different opinions of what we may believe is outrageous. Some may not be willing to spend $$ on designer clothing etc. and some will. As long as there is a market for the product everyone is good. I still think it is an incredibly high profit margin - which hey! is great for them

Re: Photographer not releasing our pictures (long)
In the future, just remember that an online gallery is not the same as getting files. Usually the photographer's price sheet even tells you how long your images will remain in an online gallery. I remember when I was wedding planning, some people would not get the rights to the pictures but scan prints instead. To me it made no sense to have professional photos and then sacrifice the quality like that. On a photographer's rate sheet, you will see a more expensive package that includes files, usually high resolution files. I get my son's pictures take less often than I would if I was not looking for files but I always pay for files.

Re: Photographer not releasing our pictures (long)
you should not assume that you have full copy right for professional pictures. She should have been clear with you about this though.
most times they will either charge you a flat fee for copy right release and sign a waiver giving you a complete cd with all your pics so you can do what you wish with them.
the photographer should have made this clear to you.

Re: Photographer not releasing our pictures (long)
I also want to note for those that are interested getting "web ready photos" aka low resoution files does not equate to getting high resolution files.
There is a sharpening that is done to photos so they can be viewed better at a screen resolution. You can upload to FB, share with your friends via email but it isn't the same as a printing them. In fact if you print a web ready or low resoution file, it doesn't come out very good.

If a photograopher tells me that she is giving me high resolutuon files, should I ask ahead of time HOW high or would she not be using that term unless she's giving me files that are good for printing?

While I think 1000 is very high, I disagree wth everything else you said. I will have spent about 700 total on the photography session I did recently.
With that I received consultation on what to wear and where to shoot, she drove to the location, we had a close to 3 hour shoot, she posted sneak peeks, a full gallery posting, countless emails helping me pick what pictures to go with and a proof of this amazing coffee table book that is part of my package (the package is a proof book, a 16X20 blow-up, and the amazing photo book...and I am also receiving my high res disk with ALL of my pics).
To me, it is worth every single dime. My photographer was amazing, took amazing pictures, and charged me reasonable prices (IMHO). Will I do this every year? No...I would be broke...but I was sending almost 200 dollars in Picture People and I only got 3 poses (and they only show you SIX!) Now I have lasting memories that make me tear up whenever I look at them.

Re: Photographer not releasing our pictures (long)
We just hired a photographer here in Charlotte to take DS' newborn portraits. It's $150 for the shoot, and $350 for a CD with 25 hi-res images. If we want the whole thing in hi-res (about 100 images), she is asking $1200.
Exorbitant? Maybe. But even though WE are in the pictures, SHE is the artist.
Of course, I had to read and sign a lengthy portrait agreement that laid all this out ahead of time.
I agree with the OP, see if she is willing to sell you the low-res files. I plan to ask this, too, because I can't imagine not being able to share our new photos on FB!

Its completely fine if you disagree and it is, of course, your absolute right to do so. I still believe that there are many overpriced photographers out there. I have a background in photography (as I said in an earlier post I minored in photography and my professor was a very well respected photographer whose work was featured in galleries). My point is that I am a photography snob so it is not like I settle for just any pictures or poses that have been replicated a million times before. I do believe it is possible to find good quality, beautiful photgraphy at a reasonable price. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I do not do huge enlargements (they are just not really my style) so the largest I ever do is 8x10 so I cannot speak as to the cost of really large format enlargements.
Again, everyone decides how much they are willing to pay for any given service and what the value of said service is to them. Perhaps if I felt I was getting something TRULY original it would be a different story. But again, everyone determines value and that is what makes this society of ours go round. I am not saying the no one should pay it just that I am surprised and that, I, personally would not pay it.
That is OK I am sure that there are many things I pay for that others would not - like Whole Foods

that is why i used someoe unrelated to LIF for newborn shots of DD. it was about $200, in my home with her backdrops and props, and i got the CD and rights to print any and all photos i want. i didn't have to order anything through her but could have if i wanted to, which i didn't.
i can't even fathom spending $500+ on one photo shoot. to me it's crazy!
that's fine that other people are okay with it, but i'd never be able to take photos of my kids at a photo shoot if i had to spend more than $200. and she was professionally trained.

I'm not sure, I guess every photographer is different. We recently used a vendor on here, she gave us the whole CD, 274 pics... No extra fee, just her hourly fee.
