Vaginal Delivery Moms...
Did any of you stay just one night in the hospital after giving birth? I am hoping to just stay one night the next time since I will have DC at home.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
It depends on what time you are admitted and what time you deliver. Its really up to you how long you stay, I mean, they cannot keep you against your will. However, depending on the hospital, they may have policies about newborns and how long they "should" stay.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
My dr offered that to me however, I opted to stay one more day to rest. Especially, knowing that I had a 3 yr old at home. I delivered in GA and it was a small hospital. It was worth it to have the rest!!

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
It depends on the time you deliver and your insurance. I had my DD at 11:33 pm at night. I arrived at 10:30 and was admitted. Even though I was only there for a short time they counted it as 1 day because of my insurance. So I slept there that night and the next. Went home early the day after.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
Technically you can leave I think within 6 hours after teh birth as long as teh baby has been examined by the pediatrician and discharge orders are written.
This being said, most pediatricians do their "Rounds" in the morning so if you give birth at noon and want to leave at 4 you either need to see if you pediatrician will come and check the baby and write orders for the baby's discharge or wait until the next morning when teh hospital pediatrician "Rounds" and writes discharge orders.
Your OB or midwife can only write discharge orders for you not the baby.
Also, if you try to leave AMA (Against MEdical Advice) because you don't want to wait for hte baby to be examined your insurance company can refuse your WHOLE medical claim!

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
With Ella, I delivered in the middle of the night (1am), and stayed only the next night. (I had the option to stay longer)
With Erik, I delivered in the morning (10am) and wanted to go home the next day but they wouldn't release Erik until he was 36 hrs old since he had some jaundice. So I had to stay 2 nights with him.

I delivered at 10:19 at night. I didn't get up to my room until after midnight. Then I did have to stay the next night. But technically, I was only there for one time during the day.

Pretty much, yes. I delivered on Sunday at 4:44am and was released at 11 am on Monday. You can ask to be released after 24 hours. The only hiccup might be that your baby may have to stay longer if there are any complications.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
My baby was born at 2:30 pm on Monday and my midwife said that as long as both of us were healthy, we could leave the next day. We had to wait until Tuesday afternoon for a test and we had to verify that we were taking DS to the ped on Wednesday morning, but we left after only one night in the hospital.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
I was there two nights, but I delivered by baby at 9 pm. This was after a 23 hour labor--I was beyond exhausted. No way was I going home sooner than I did. I stayed the following night too, and went home the next day. honestly? I felt like I could have used another day in the hospital.
My advice--stay until they throw you out. Even if it's an easy delivery, you will need lots of rest. It's also the only time you will have access to nurses to help you with your baby, breastfeeding, etc. especially valuable if this is your first child.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
I believe that you are required to stay two days but depending on when you are admitted it might not be two full days.
For example: I think if you are admitted at 9:00 pm - that is considered one day and then the next day is two days. So really it's one day and three hours.
DS slept at my SIL one night and home with DH the second night (I gave birth at 3:00 p.m.)

You are not required to stay a certain minimum amount of days. Most insurance companies will only cover 48 hours after delivery.
It is up to the healthcare providor and when they will write teh discharge orders. This being said, unless you ASK to leave earlier everyone usually stays what their health insurance will cover.

Re: Vaginal Delivery Moms...
It depends on what time you deliver and what your insurance covers, but the usual tiem is a 2 nitght stay.
When I had my DS, I had a roommate that got there after me and left ebfore me. She asked her doctor if she could be released with in 24 hours and the doctor okayed it and she was let go after being ther 24 hours. But I don't know if they let the baby go at the same time.
