Q for BTDT moms re: Bras and Labor/Delivery

Ok really stupid q i know...i think i am over-thinking things as the clock ticks closer and closer...

Do you wear a bra in the hospital during delivery or do they make you take everything off but the gown?

If you do wear a bra and plan on BF does that mean you should wear a nursing bra so you can nurse imm after? Also if you are planning to BF are underwire's already a no-no at this point.

TIA!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: While I'm on the subject - another q for ya - does it matter what you wear to the hospital? Do you imm take it off and wear a gown the whole time in labor/delivery regardless or should I make sure to wear something super comfortable? TIA!

I remember clearly they would not let me wear a bra I tried but they said NO... I gave birth at LIJ. Some hospitals may be different.

I wore a nursing bra and it was on for a long time...even when I got the epi. But...you're not supposed to. It's all a blur but at one point I remember the nurse realized I had one on and said she was shocked that the other doctors didn't say anything. I was prepared to have it cut but they were great in figuring out how to get all the wires and tubes out of it.

Me too. However, they were just jogging type bras with NO underwire. The docs and nurses all asked if it had underwire, and even took a peek to make sure. then I was allowed to wear it. Besides that, its the gown and nothing else!

Really? I guess I got lucky because I had an underwire on both times! Chat Icon

They don't want you to wear an underwire in case something happens and they have to use the paddles on you.

You don't want metallic things on your body then.

I was told to take everything off and I stayed that way until after my first shower the next morning, then I put a nursing bra on.

Re: Q for BTDT moms re: Bras and Labor/Delivery

I was not able to wear a bra. I was told no underwire for my nursing bra because it can cut into the milk ducts.

The one thing I wish I had packed was button down shirts. I packed a nightgown that buttoned down to nearly my belly button, but I ended up taking it off to nurse because it didn't let me open enough.

Re: Q for BTDT moms re: Bras and Labor/Delivery

I wore my bra most of the time. When I eventually got the epi they unsnapped it and I couldn't snap it back, but by that time I was already pushing. After I was cleaned up, my DH snapped it back up.

Re: Q for BTDT moms re: Bras and Labor/Delivery

At Southside they made me take off my "street clothes" & put on the hospital gown (nothing underneath).

Afterwards I had worn underwire nursing bras but after 2 wks I developed an infection (due to this & sleeping on my stomach).

After the first day I suggest wearing comfortable pants (dark colors) and/or a nursing top.
