Re: Vatican urges Obama not to change stem cell policy
I think it's time for some of the world's other religions and action groups to remind our new president of their stance on letting millions of sick Americans weaken and die instead of improving and thriving because certain people's beliefs and their imposition on others have forestalled lifesaving medical progress.

they will oppose any changes in U.S. policies on embryonic stem cell research.
Now, I guess I should start out by saying that I'm Jewish ...
But, IMHO, who the heck cares if the Vatican "opposes any changes in the U.S. policies"
Why would the US government care?
I'm not asking why Catholics care what the Pope or the Vatican have to say ... but why would anyone who ISN'T Catholic care?
I'm really curious ... I'm not trying to be argumentative or confrontational. I really want to know why/how this affects any one who is of a different religion or belief system.
ITA- and I am catholic!
There's supposed to be separation of church and state, no?

Comparing apples and oranges.
For the US, Yes, there's supposed to be separation of church and state.
For the Vatican, the church IS the state.
I don't fault the Vatican for putting it out there, i don't see how its out of line or offensive, and i also don't expect Obama to change his stance. It is what it is.

The Vatican represents 1 BILLION people. IMO, it is their DUTY to make known to the leaders of the world their stance on issues, regardless of whether or not the government or person is in agreement. It is important for Obama to know that for MANY of the 77 MILLION Catholics in the country that he is now representing, this is an important issue.
But I think you incorrectly assume that the Vatican speaks for all catholics, because it does not. Many, Many catholics do not agree with what the Vatcian has to say, on this subject and others.

um, yeah.
I think everyone should be prepared for stuff like this. all foreign leaders (Pope included) will want to "reiterate" their positions with the new president.
I don't see this being any different than the Israeli govt wondering what kid of "friend" they have in Obama or the Afghani govt wondering when they can expect more troops (and the Iraqi less)
the Papacy's power in the world has waned considerably over the course of the centuries...and perhaps they can't sway Obama, but they would be doing a disservice to their constituency if they said nothing on the matter.
I may not agree with what the Pope or any other world leader says, but I RESPECT their right to say it.

Good for the Vatican.
And many voters feel differently. There is another election in 4 years that the vatican won't be voting in.
We'll see who Obama listens to: his voters or the vatican.
Seriously! Who gives a rats arse what the vatican thinks.
A lot of people do, especially Catholic Americans.
It's no different from how other religious or ethnic groups would be impacted by a statement from a leader of that group.

But that's the same as saying that everyone in the US thinks that there should or shouldn't be stem cell research either despite of or inline with the country's official policies. The people of any given country/religion/organisation etc may not agree with its stance or legislation, but that doesn't mean said institution doesn't have the right to make known said stance.

There still is. This isn't a separation of church and state issue.

But the Vatican does speak for all Catholics. You may not agree with what they say, but if you are a Catholic you believe that the Vatican , and the Pope specifically, is the infallible spokesperson for the official Catholic stance.
