Vent - Unified Doors & Windows
Well yesterday when we had our new door installed there was a miscommunication when we ordered the door.
Here is the story:
We ordered our door from the Unified in Huntington. When the order was being written up, right in front of us, we asked a lot of questions. We were never told that the "Existing Opening", meant our old wood frame work. We thought the whole entired opening that the door and sidelights took up. We were "Verbally" told that it was a new metal frame. It's not. The new door and side lights are "Replacement" pieces. That is not what we thought we were paying for. So as soon as we understood that is what was going on, from the installer, we told them to stop and that I was calling the Unified main store. I spoke with a Manager and he pulled up our contract. The miscommunication was that no where did it say "Replacement" door and sidelights. And we were not told that verbally either by the sales person. So I asked what we could do with our old wood frames and the manager said that the installer has capping with him and for an extra fee he can put that on the outside of the frame. So that is why we have to put white trim around the door and then also paint some of the old wood framing white to match the door inside.
So lesson learned, make sure everything is understood 100% before they fill out that contract and you pay for it. It wasn't our fault because we asked all the right questions to the sales person in the first place. He verbally kept telling us that we would have everything new. So no new sill (the board on the bottom of your door way), no new metal frame construction, just a steel door and and steel sidelights with capping on the outside to make it look like its all one new piece. We are still p*ssed off, but it's all the sales persons fault, because he did NOT tell us certain things. We were not rushing him in anyway the day we ordered it either. But I think his mind was else where. The manager said he would talk with this sales person, but I have some mind to go back into that store and have a talk with that sales person.
Also.....regarding their windows.....the manager told me that the reason they keep their prices down is because they are just replacement windows. They do NOT reconstruct anything....they don't even like to put any molding or capping up either because people complain about what they have. What the hell! Then let people pick what they want.....problem solved.
So if you are thinking about using Unified, I'm not saying not to use them, I'm just saying, make sure you understand what you are buying and what you might not be getting. The price was better then other places and now we know why!!!
Vent over!

Re: Vent - Unified Doors & Windows
I hear you. In my recent experience, no window/door company I interviewed for new windows and a sliding door would do any new frames or sills unless you wanted to pay almost double the price of the window or door. My husband ended up doing them himself with the help of a contractor. I actually just saw an ad in the ny post today for unified and said to myself wow they are more reasonable then the company i went with. oh well!

Re: Vent - Unified Doors & Windows
The same thing happened to me (along w/ a laundry list of other issues) but w/ Elegant Entries. I paid $4k for a custom round top door - and they put the effing thin in on the old rotting frame ..........I was told by the sales guy (when I specifically asked) that EVERYTHING was new .........
The 5th guy that came back to fix numerous issues finally admitted they don't order a new frame unless it's specifically requested (which I though I did) and they don't tell you that b/c it's an additional $1k - I told him the sales guy was a moron b/c I would have paid the extra money - WHY the hell would I put a $4k door on a rotting wood frame?????
I'm STILL dealing w/ BS from that company.
It kills me that these compaines have the nerve to charge you obscene amounts of money, and do SH*T work !!!

Re: Vent - Unified Doors & Windows
good to see I'm not on my own with this, but this is crazy. Why does someone pay between $3-4k for a door and NOT get a new frame? And it took them 16 weeks for the door and the sidelights to come in. WHY? If you weren't giving us a new frame, what was the problem. Now I'm even more mad, because it seems like common sales with these places.
