Vent: my mom bought my son..
His first Halloween costume! She was like "oh by the way, I bought him his Halloween costume -it's a little tiger, I'm so excited!" I was like Um, Mom - this is his first Halloween, I was planning on getting it for him....
I will probably still put it on him and take a pic for her but I thought that was too much! I told my DH and he got so annoyed...come on though, he's our first baby and this is his first Halloween! Of course we want to pick his costume out! I'm still going to get one on my own.
eta 9/6: my mom came by today. she handed me the costume and said "i couldn't resist, but i know you want to buy him your own so just put him in it and take a pic for me!" i should print this and show her

I completely sympathize with you. My family bought DD's first Christmas outfit.

Re: Vent: my mom bought my son..
Aw, I can definitely understand being frustrated by that.
I know this is your first child... let me ask you this... is this your mom's first grandchild??? I swear, these grandparents get so excited about their grandchildren that I am convinced they lose a part of their common sense when it comes to some things! I'm sure she didn't mean to spoil anything for you... even if it got you annoyed!

She probably didn't realize how much it would mean to you! My mom likes to do a lot of those things...and it gets on my nerves at times....so I have to keep reminding myself how lucky I am that my daughter has grandparents that love her so much! They can be just as excited as we are!

Re: Vent: my mom bought my son..
I know how you feel. My aunt bought my DD her Xmas dress last year (1st Xmas) and while it was very sweet of her I was a little upset to not have picked it out for her myself. This year I'm making sure I get her a Xmas dress myself.

I totally know what you mean! My MIL bought DS a LADYBUG costume! I tried to be as polite as possible that 1st of all, a lady bug if for a girl, and 2nd of all, it's my favorite holiday, *I* am the one to buy his costume!

OH, I am sooo sorry you had to experience what most people have and understand....it stinks.
I recently went through a similar situation. I make DS food (pureed veggies, fruit, etc.). My MIL told me she is going to buy jars to keep in her home. She knows I make his own. I pretty much said, "if you want to spend the money, go ahead, but he eats what I make him."

To add to this...sometimes I just think grandparents need to BUY things...just too.....

I understand your frustration, I do....but what I have learned to do is let my mom just do it. It makes her so happy (and there are few things that make her happy!)
I also figure, hey better her money then mine! LOL...Is that horrible?

Re: Vent: my mom bought my son..
My MIL AND my mom bought DS Halloween costumes! So now I am also faced with hurting their feelings whichever one he doesn't use, AND he doesn't get to be what I wanted him to be!
Ah well, at least we are blessed with mothers who care too much and not that they dont care enough!

ITA with this.
I mean, DS had a costume for his first Halloween and one of my mom's friends bought him one as a gift, so he wore that one.
I'm sorry, but I don't see what the big deal is, I wish someone would buy DS' this year

Oh Jen! So sorry!!!!
They're going to do that, Grandparents just don't understand. it's hard, but just let her buy it and do what you're doing. Put him in it and take a picture and then get him the costume YOU want.
The one thing I learned was to tell each set of Grandmothers when I started "looking".... they seemed to have gotten the hint (I told them last week I was on the hunt for her Christmas dress- LOL)

Re: Vent: my mom bought my son..
OK...I understand you want to buy his outfit and you still can. But I am trying to bite my tounge here because I think posts like this are just insane. You should be grateful that your child has grandparent who want to spoil him. They live for this stuff...and it makes them so happy to give. Instead of venting, I think you should be appriciative, she meant no harm. How hard is it to bundle him in a cute outfit, take a picture, and take it off? I know Im going to get flamed- but I just had to put that out there.

Because it's her kid and not her mom's and she waited 9 months to do his "firsts". Our moms had their chance with us and now it's our turn. Jen I can totally understand how you feel. Believe me.

Because she has waited YEARS for her DS, and wanted to do this "first" herself.
Jen - I know your mom didn't mean anything by it, she was just excited. I know that the PP hormones also make us a little more emotional, but I understand why you are upset. I agree though with others, put him in the outfit, take a few pictures to make your mom happy, then put him in YOUR outfit.

I totally understand that point, and YES, the "firsts" are important.
But I have seen a Grandmother who could care LESS about her grandson and it would be amazing if she even saw him more than once a year or even called on his birthday.
That's why when my parents buy things for my DS, even if it is for a "first", I think it si awesome b/c we have the other side too.
By NO means was I mean to her, I just said *I* don't think that it is a big deal.
