VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I JUST NEED TO VENT about a dog i know that is about to be sent packing because someone got married and they're pregnant and "can't do both".
I know there are people out there that can do both. It boggles my mind. This dog may be going to someone else I know. It will not be left at a shelter but I know the dog is UBER attached to this owner.
Thanks for listening.

Kills me. KILLS Me. I'm sorry but if you feel you can't handle both- then don't EVER get a pet if you even remotely plan to have kids. This angers me soooo much!

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I'm pregnant right now and could never imagine ever thinking this way. My doggie is my baby, how could I ever give him up? I'm already worried that he might feel like the spotlight is being taken away from him. People like that should never have gotten a pet in the first place.

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I could never imagine!! We have two dogs who are our "babies" i kiss them; hold them; take them to the stores with me. Granted some of these things will change once our little one arrives; but i could NEVER see giving them up It would depress me too much!

Ugh-it is so awful when people do this!
Animals are living beings...not just things! It's terrible. DH and I are not having children for a few more years, but I would never, ever get rid of my cats!

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I'm so sick of "those" people. It breaks my heart every night. I dont know how people can have a pet and then discard them when a baby comes. My brain cant even fathom it.

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I want to post things like this EVERY day.
These people really sicken me deep inside....I get so angry and sick to my stomach that someone could USE something so precious and generous and loving as a pet....only until they have other things to occupy their time.
There are a few cases of this I have read or heard about that still get me angry days, months and years later about people doing this very thing.
So what do these AHOLES plan on doing with their dog????
My dogs are STILL my babies, I love them the same if not MORE, now that I have a human child. And you know what? She loves them too., b/c THAT is what she sees her parents doing. Giving them love and caring for them like the little babies they are.

And I hope these people never plan on having TWO kids. B/c can you imagine having to take care of two things.....and give love and time to two things???? OH THE HORROR. Just too hard I guess. So I suggest they never have another child after their first one comes along. They can't handle taking care of two things that require care.

I agree with you 1000000%. I could never in a million years think about getting rid of my animals. I made a life long commitment to take care of them and will remain as loyal to them as they have always been to me

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I do not have children. I do not have dogs. I love all animals. When my rabbit was alive we literally drove him with us to florida for vacation rather than put him through the trauma of flying. He was my child and i loved him as such. Having an animal is a commitment. I can understand if someone develops allergies (I did, to cats later in life), but to just say you cannot do baby+dog makes me feel like they probably won't be able to do baby either.

Honestly, allergies do occur. But I also know that many times when people say their DC or someone has allergies to a pet, it's a lie or an exaggeration or a random guess, all disguised as "allergies to the pet" simply to avoid scrutiny from others. Or they knew there could be an allergy issue yet they HAD to get that pet and then conveniently the situation is just too much to "bear" when a DC comes along.
Wasnt that on Friends...Chandler was supposedly allergic to dogs? But it wasn't true?
I know it can be the case, and I feel for those people who are forced to make that decision. But I KNOW for a fact people lie about this stuff too often. They find it's an easy out to say so and so is allergic.
Another classic example is people have a baby and then neglect their pet, ostracize their pet, traumatize their pet then the pet gets nervous pent up energy, sadness, frustration. Which turns into the pet maybe acting out a bit. So then it gives some people another reason to say their pet became aggressive and had to go, or spiteful and had to go. Again, not all cases work this way, but MANY do and the owners could care less about trying to make it work. They WANT an EASY way out so the dog or cat slips up once or twice and it's gone.
You can often see the writing on the wall...you can see this coming in many cases by things the owners say or stories they begin to tell to paint the picture...and set the scene. I don't know how these people sleep at night (the liars and the cold hearted ones who just wanted a pet when they had spare time).
But you watch. When their babies are older...and their kids are begging for a pet, the cycle continues and they run out and get a pet again...only to not think enough again about what the pet needs and if anyone will be home often enough, etc.

I agree with you...I feel like this happens more than it should.
NOT to say that everyone is making up allergies--I know that's not the case.
I think there's also other possibilities before giving up a pet. I was allergic to everything when I was little...I was extremely allergic to cats...I got allergy shots, and I still had exposure to the allergens, and I eventually built up an immunity to it. I'm only allergic to my cats on very, very rare occasion these days, and it's very mild when it happens.

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I have no respect for people like that. I had a sick, old cat when my son was born. He needed care and attention. He got it. We got another cat after he died and now have a dog. Animals are family members. Not accessories.

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
Totally agree, biggest pet peeve ever. The scary thing is the entire time I was pregnant people kept telling me that I'd want to get rid of the dog once the baby was here. I actually had someone ask me what I planned to do with her once the baby was born!!
I wish that everyone could see the total love my DD has for our dog (and vice versa especially when she's eating, haha). They really are awesome together. Although, it takes a bit more work, it's totally manageable and I could NOT imagine my life without my puppy-love.

Re: VENT people giving up their pet when baby is coming
I'm pregnant right now and we have a pit. She is the sweetest thing in the world and she is the apple of dh and my eye.
Everyone asks me if we're worried about the baby and Casey and I tell them no. She loves kids. I'm more worried about our cat since hes never been around children but I know everyone will be fine together.
It really bothers me when people ask me if we're going to get rid of Casey or if we're worried about her.
Having a pet is a life long commitment!
