Verizon data usage
The last two billing cycles DH and I have gone over our data - we've had Verizon for years and never went over before. We've had no changes In our usage - does anyone have any ideas as to why? We kill our apps, etc. what could cause the overages out of nowhere?

For the past 2 months we have gotten text messages from Verizon saying that we are close to going over, but haven't actually gone over - yet. Someone told me it could be because now when you go on FB the videos play automatically. You can stop that from happening by going into settings, scroll down to FB and then go into settings in FB and under video, switch "Auto Play" to wi-fi only. Not really sure if this will help, but it can't hurt.

This happened to me too... This actually worked for me.... It was from all the ice bucket challenges videos that were on fb... Do what was said in the post. It works...

Yes. Disable the videos to only Wifi on FB. It's been happening to a LOT of people.

Verizon data usage
I've honestly had it with Verizon. I've had them for five years and never went over my data usage (I've never gone over 1 GB). I recently went there, used my upgrade to get a new phone and somehow in the past month I've used 3GB. I've been monitoring it for the past few days and my data usage has been going up when I'm sitting in my house on my wi-fi and it's BS. This whole data thing is such a scam in my opinion.

I've gotten the same notifications from Verizon also for the past 2 months. I turned the video auto-play off completely. Hoping this will save data like people said. I feel like I already pay too much for my cell phones -- I am not paying an extra $15 for 1GB of data for going over.

After my plan with verizon is up early next year, I will be switching elsewhere. I pay way too much for practically nothing, even with their special 'promotions' they give me when I make a huge stink over it.

Re: Verizon data usage
Be sure to never update any apps when you're not on wifi. That sucks up all your data instantly.

Do you use fb on your phone. If yes, go to settings, Facebook, videos, and set the videos to not auto play. This has been causing a big problem for many people. A recent fb app update has the videos autopsy as soon as you open the app. It eats your data.

It's definitely the automatic video downloading! ! My DH was using a TON of data until I switched that. Then the huge data useage stopped.

I was thinking the same thing but as I've been looking around, everything else is just as expensive. T-Mobile has a deal but the people I've spoken with who have it hate it. Not sure what my options are.

Re: Verizon data usage
Those that are switching, where are you going? My contract I had for years is up with AT&T and I find the coverage on LI is horrible. I was thinking of going to Verizon but now this has me worried. I saw something on their website for $60 a month for unlimited everything.

Same! I go upstate a lot too & my only communication with people is my cell for calls & data - Verizon is the only one up there with great service. So Verizon it is....13+ years and counting.

Re: Verizon data usage
If you have an Android, also check on Google +. The app was preloaded on my phone (Nexus 5 with T-Mobile) I have never used it, The other day, the app updated and it ran in the background without me knowing. I got the Data Usage warning and when I checked my usage on my phone, it said Google + has used almost 3 gb of data in a WEEK!!!!!!!!!! I disabled the app..... Check for that too, besides the FB video thing!!!!!!

Verizon data usage
I've had it with Verizon!! Ever since i switched to the 5s i've had nothing but overages. I've had to call every month for them to fix my bill and each month after is a new problem. I never went over 3g with my 4 and now somehow i'm up to 5g. Last person I spoke with at verizon said the LTE uses more data. It would have been nice for the salesman to know this info and say I should upgrade my data amount to cover it but nooooo. I feel like I got bamboozaled. My bill used to be $90 a month now it's $140. I've done everything they said to do to help resolve the issue and none of it has made a difference.
Also, go through the itemized bill (online) and see the times you're using data. Most of mine were while I was at work, on wifi or sleeping, at home, on wifi. I figured they'd be while I was on the LIRR but it wasn't the case. So much for wifi!!!
Verizons solution was to shut off cellular and just use wifi when necessary. I'm sorry but for $140 a month that's not a solution i'm ok with.

As much as I can't stand Verizon this has nothing to do with them. Your iPhone 5S can pull data faster so you will likely use more. Any sort of streaming or video service uses TONS of data. A 20 minute video at the fastest speed can easily use 1GB of data.
You can disable LTE access on your phone settings, so you will just get the slower speeds. But if you switch to AT&T you will have the same issue. You have to fix your usage habits.

Also, if you're using Waze; it uses a LOT of data; just an FYI. I know mine runs sometimes when I don't even know it is.
