I've had it with Verizon!! Ever since i switched to the 5s i've had nothing but overages. I've had to call every month for them to fix my bill and each month after is a new problem. I never went over 3g with my 4 and now somehow i'm up to 5g. Last person I spoke with at verizon said the LTE uses more data. It would have been nice for the salesman to know this info and say I should upgrade my data amount to cover it but nooooo. I feel like I got bamboozaled. My bill used to be $90 a month now it's $140. I've done everything they said to do to help resolve the issue and none of it has made a difference.
Also, go through the itemized bill (online) and see the times you're using data. Most of mine were while I was at work, on wifi or sleeping, at home, on wifi. I figured they'd be while I was on the LIRR but it wasn't the case. So much for wifi!!!
Verizons solution was to shut off cellular and just use wifi when necessary. I'm sorry but for $140 a month that's not a solution i'm ok with.
As much as I can't stand Verizon this has nothing to do with them. Your iPhone 5S can pull data faster so you will likely use more. Any sort of streaming or video service uses TONS of data. A 20 minute video at the fastest speed can easily use 1GB of data.
You can disable LTE access on your phone settings, so you will just get the slower speeds. But if you switch to AT&T you will have the same issue. You have to fix your usage habits.
Ave is dead on correct. You getting data faster and using more of it. Check your apps to see what they are "Auto" sending. Facebook, G+ and others will upload pic/vids to the cloud. iCould will back up as well. You want to backup on "WIFI ONLY" for those aps. As someone else posted, the Facebook auto movies playing is a huge culprit in this.
Another thing I see going on, people arent connecting to WIFI when its available in a store, home, work, etc...

Dh lost his grandfathered in unlimited data with his recent upgrade.
I did too. I was so mad, but DH really wanted a smartphone and I could only get him one (for free) by exchanging my iphone4 for two 5c's. Of course I lost my unlimited data...
I have no idea where I will go after Verizon. I used to have AT&T (2001ish) and I had horrible service in my house and a ton of dropped calls. I don't know if they have improved in the last 10+ years at all. I do know that if we put mine, DH, and my parents (they want to get smart phones as well) on one plan with AT&T, it'll cost ten dollars more than what DH & I pay for our two phone plan now with Verizon. I've looked into TMobile as well but it seems everyone hates them.
I try to connect to wifi whenever available, but it's not always possible. I think it's awful how much they get away charging us for data.

I feel this is Verizon's problem. If they knew the new phones/LTE would use more data, why wouldn't they state that when going over my usage and plan? I would have stayed with the 4 on my unlimited data plan. Why am I using data, all day, when I'm on a very strong wifi network at my office? Something is screwy here, whether it's the phone or Verizon.
The only difference I've made is that I don't watch videos on my phone. Not on facebook, youtube or anything.
I did a month off of LTE and it didn't make a difference. Two weeks in I was still receiving texts that I was 75% through my data. How is that even possible?

Verizon data usage
I started getting the usage texts the lasts 3 months. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up as some kind of class action suit against verizon and them having something to do with this. I have an android - it doesn't auto play any vids and I haven't changed my phone usage in the last year , this seems to be happening to way too many people

How is this their problem? The phones technically don't use more data, it just brings the data to you FASTER. You need to understand the difference. Since you have the ability to get the data faster, you can use more data but not always. Browsing a particular website uses the same data whether you have a 3G iphone 4 vs. a LTE iphone 5s.
They are even proactive in alerting you when you are getting close to using your data. I don't see what the problem is? When you are on wifi you aren't using cellular data. This isn't carrier specific with Verizon.

And again this isn't carrier specific. Look at what they say:
"You're Going To Watch More Videos"
"And they'll also tell you that they now use their phone for a whole lot of things they didn't used to -- watching videos, downloading music and spending more time on social networks."
"It's not just the network -- the next iPhone will be more powerful and faster than the one you have now, which will make you want to use it more often and for more things. Increased use = more data consumed."
These are all USER controlled actions. Don't do any of these and you won't gobble up your data. What's the issue here?
