Let me also thank so many for you for "the kick us while we're down" comments. Shame on you. And my comment has nothing to do with some "not agreeing" with me. Some of your statements are despicable. I dont need you to be "sympathetic". But the fact of the matter is a I have FAMILY that depends on me. We are in a bad spot. SHAME ON YOU!!

This is not specific to you, but the collective you know this happens every three years. Why is this not planned for? I lived through almost a year long strike as a kid, money was set aside for this. Are most of these single income families?

How do people on LI save for something like this- with taxes, mortgages, day care, etc? My dad was on strike when I was a kid too- but back then it was possible to live on one income AND be able to save. This is a different time and a different place. Those families that can build up a good savings are the unicorns- I have a feeling most families, especially those with young kids and two incomes, can't do that as well.

Exactly!!

It does not happen every 3 years. Last one was 2011 and before that I think the late 90s? (Been with DH since 2001 and there's only been the strike in 2011 since I've been with him). That's like asking most Americans do they have the recommended 6-8 months in savings. Most don't. My husband does save for it but that account only has 5 weeks of pay.

This. Strikes absolutely do not happen every three years. The last strike was in 2012.. the strike before that was the year 2000. As for my family, we save what we can but as many of us can attest to it is not easy to do that living here on Long Island

It was August of 2011. I thought I was going to have to cut my maternity leave short. Union went back to work under good faith efforts from the company. But yes, where is public getting this notion of every 3 years?!?!

Yes you're right.....and I had to bring my 1 year old to picket duty with me. I believe we got a new contract in 2012

Oh where does the public get the idea it's every 3 years?? Probably from the Internet since we all know everything we read on the Internet is true Chat Icon

But if everyone always says "Well, that's the way it is...", and every year, every company keeps chipping away at all of our benefits, when will it end? When will the employees say "Enough is enough". Do we have to wait until companies take away 401(k) plans, don't pay anything for medical, take away vacations and holidays? Corporations would be thrilled if they could do all of those things, and are trying to do it all the time.

There are many studies that show that if corporations treat and pay their employees well, the company does better overall. Better retention rate, better productivity, etc.

My husband has been with VZ for almost 20 year and yes most of the VZ families we know are single income.

Re: Verizon Strike

This thread legit makes me sick. Why are people so freaking nasty? Regardless if it happens every 3 years or not... Regardless if its the norm to have XYZ.. Its what they have -- and they want to fight for it.. is that so wrong? People have worked HARD for years and years to keep these benefits. Just because you work for a company that doesnt offer it, doesnt make it ok for someone to take it away from these hard working people!

Why dont people save for this? Maybe because they cant! We went from a 2 Full Time Income family to a one income family -- and added 2 children -- because it wasnt worth it to me to work, and pay for child care. We made the sacrifice for quality of life. We also lost everything we owned in Sandy and had to dig ourselves out from that -- Again not able to save. Life in NY isnt easy -- but thats a choice we made. My husband works like a dog, and sacrifices A LOT to provide for his family. He works weekends, major holidays, misses many events. HE wants nothing more than to be able to go to work right now.

I pray to god none of you ever have to deal with loss of your main income, and have to deal with the worry and stress we are dealing with right now. I hope that if you do, you do not experience the nastiness and negativity that you are expelling.

i understand this is incredibly hard for all the vz families and that you are all in a bad place right now.
i doubt anyone here wishes for this strike to continue. i know i can't imagine myself in this situation and pray this ends well for all of you, but let's try to remember that this is a discussion board.

disagreeing with you is not nastiness.
having a different opinion is not nastiness
talking about both sides of the strike is not nastiness

Re: Verizon Strike

I really don't see how anyone is being nasty to you all. We have all said we understand it's hard. I get that this is a touchy subject but you're picking a fight where there just isn't one. Most of us agree with you and are just offering different perspectives. No one is against you here and you're choosing not to see that. I'm not sure if that's just because you all just need to vent or what.

You experience what some of us are experiencing...the uncertainty, the anxiety, the defeated feeling, feeling like you're going to fail your children... then come talk to me about how SOME..not all....of these comments are not nasty. But this type of comment is another LIF given...the old "I have no idea why you're offended" song and dance. Maybe I am "venting or what" as you put it. This is family's livelihood we're talking about!!! May you NEVER be in this position. You don't have to agree with anything the union tries to do...that's your right but some of you should have a bit more respect for the position some families are unfortunately in.

I've tried being nice and supportive, but since you want an argument... maybe you should take into consideration that some families on here are in a worse position then you. Maybe you should hope that you never find yourself in their position. Some of us have been laid off with no income for months on end. Most of us don't have a union fighting for us. Consider yourself lucky that at some point the strike will end and you will be back to a job that has benefits that a lot of posters here consider a pretty nice luxury. Stop telling people that hopefully they never find themselves in your position, because honestly it could be wayyyy worse.

Well said. I've watched many men and women laid off and have to sell their homes knowing they can't find a job at 50-55 years old. They have no pensions or health insurance after job loss. This is the reality the private sector has to deal with, every round of layoffs. These Union people will be back to work, likely sooner rather than later. They are lucky to have jobs to go back to, most don't have that luxury. As a matter of fact the management at Verizon has been facing layoffs for years. The work force and that side has been slashed drastically. Watch, once these people go back to work, management will be slashed yet again.

Re: Verizon Strike

Just my 2 cents but why would anyone on here start in with someone whose family is suffering from this strike?!

It is NOT the time.

If you do not agree w the strike or how it is being conducted maybe YOU should have some CLASS and keep it to yourself as other people are out of work and concerned about how they will pay their bills and feed their families.

It is outrageous to me that anyone would start a debate or offer anything other than SUPPORT at a time like this.

To all the posters dealing w this strike I am sorry and I truly hope it is resolved soon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are a Verizon family and what they are calling "strike" is actually contract time every three years. People not in Verizon have the recent memory of the last strike and I assume this is where they are getting their wrong info. Unfortunately it looks like the way we are headed is a strike every three years from here on :(.

When I stated this comes up every 3 years, I did mean the contract not the actual strikes. I should have stated more clearly, the threat of strike comes up every 3 years if contract is not negotiated. I assumed VZ families knew exactly what I meant.

Sadly, I agree with the last 2 posters. It's almost like job security no longer exists. Huge companies are laying off thousands of employees monthly. Pensions are practically a thing of the past. I don't know anyone outside of civil service that actually has one. The civil service jobs lose benefits every time a new contract goes through too. I feel terrible for the families dealing with this strike but times have changed and it seems like they should reassess their demands.

Although I am NOT sympathetic to the people striking......

...my job did not give me a raise in 4 years. I went and got a new job. They raised my healthcare costs and I had to pay.

Like I said I am NOT unsympathetic to those striking, and I *do* understand its not *that easy* to just go get another job.

MY IPHONE DID NOT TYPE WHAT I WROTE. I WOULD NEVER EVER SAY I AM NOT SYMPATHETIC.

I want to be clear. I AM 100% sympathetic to the striking people,

That was an ABSOLUTE mistype. I completely apologize for that mistype!!!!!!!!!

Re: Verizon Strike

Here is how the managers are being treated in Nassau County this week. Police on horseback have to escort them from the building. It's a 7 minute video... most of the activity starts around the 3:45 minute mark. I have absolute empathy for the reasons behind this strike, and compassion for people's families. It has been said repeatedly here that no one blames the managers, who work side by side with the Union everyday. This video paints a different picture. It makes feelings of empathy and compassion difficult to sustain. The person who posted this video titled it "Running of the Scabs".

I count my blessings EVERY DAY. Some people having it way worse does NOT bring me ANY sort of comfort bc my heart breaks for anyone in way worse circumstances. Because I have compassion....which is apparently not something you are familar with.
So you stick with your "ignorance is bliss" stance. I've stated my situation and my beliefs. Your comments continue to be rude....Shocking!
Anyway enjoy this beautiful day. I'm done here.
