wake a sleeping baby?

William breastfed ALOT last night.I finally got him off to sleep and now its been 3 hrs since last feed. He is out like a light. Meawnhile all night he was demanding to eat and had dirty diapers all night. Poor kid never went to bed

Do i wake him to eat? Hes already had plenty of pee and poop diapers today and ate alot thru the night.

Re: wake a sleeping baby?

no, I wouldn't.

once he does wake, or about to wake, throw him on boob that instant. he is going to wake crazy hungry and you don't want to aggravate him by making him wait a second longer then he wants to.

congrats on last night!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: wake a sleeping baby?

i wouldnt especially since my DS is not a good sleeper, so when he's out, i leave him. usually when DS sleeps through his feeding i make sure his bottle is ready b/c i know he will wake up screaming for it.

i would leave him..he'll wake when he's ready. make sure your boob is ready for him when he wakes Chat Icon

Never wake a sleeping baby! DD slept 10 HOURS her first night home from the hospital. I panicked and called the dr. the next day and he said to count our blessings! She was always a good sleeper! Chat Icon

I guess I'm in the minority. I feel when they're so new (and still figuring out their days and night) that they (BF babies) absolutely should be woken every 3 hours to eat- especially during the day. So early in the game, your supply needs all the encouragement it can get.

Re: wake a sleeping baby?

Rule of thumb is if he's regained his birthweight, you're safe to let him sleep without waking for feedings, at least that's what our Ped told us!

I agree. In the beginning if DS slept more than 3 hours during the day, I woke him to eat. He needed to regain his birthweight and I needed to help establish my supply.

i also agree, im not sure what your dcs weight situation is but as for building a supply, you need to nurse every 2-3 hours in the beginning in order to max out

My ped told me to wake my DD for feedings every 3 hours until we went to our first appointment after taking her home to make sure she regained her birth weight. After that appointment he only recommended waking her during the day. We did it to help her learn days and nights.

Re: wake a sleeping baby?

I know people say to never wake a sleeping baby, but I always woke DS up after 2-3hrs during the day to eat. In the beginning they need to eat.

At night I never woke him up though. I was always told to let a baby sleep at night and let them wake you up when they are hungry. My DS would usually go down at around 930pm and sleep about 3-4hrs. Then it was every 2 hrs for the rest of the night.

These are the times when I would pump and I ended up building up enough of a freezer supply that I was able to give BM for a good month AFTER my stopping BFing. My children never had any weight issues.
