Washington DC with kids
I used to live in DC and I do think it can be done in two days. One day I would stick to the mall and see the monuments and museums. My kids love going to the zoo so that always take up a lot of time

I love DC and agree that the mall and the zoo are the places to concentrate assuming they're on the younger side.
The plus is that the Smithsonians are free - including the zoo. So if you spend an hour and the kids are bored you can pop into the next one and you didn't waste money.
Most of the good free ones are on the mall. The zoo is not, but it is just a short metro ride away.
As a SS teacher I cannot wait until my DS is older so I can do the more historical stuff with him!

Museum of Natural History (not sure if it is better than the one in NYC. We go to the one in DC so often that our kids like the one in NYC better.)
Air and Space Museum
Mall - Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial - great photo ops
You can also do the zoo but I personally don't think the DC Zoo is that great.
If you are driving down to DC, you may want to stop by Baltimore and do the aquarium or Port Discovery Children's Museum. Our boys love both.

2 days as in a weekend? That's hard: I have done it, but it feels rushed. I'd say at least 3 days: 2 for mall area & 1 for zoo.
Agree cc nice that museums are free. Agree w reccs above.
With this gorgeous weather, depending on age of the kid, I'd spend a lot of time walking around the monuments.
