watching other people's kids?
any advice? i HAVE to go back to work this year unfortunately (we're buying a house and need a paystub for my mortgage) but in reality, i'd be making more money watching one child in my home (i'm only bringing home $900/month after daycare) AND i'd get to stay home with my baby too! we're moving to a great area (park, library, farmer's market, etc. all within walking distance) so it'd be perfect for and i'd like to have a sorta play group for DD. plus i think i'd really enjoy it too (i HATE my job now...).
i'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to start this. i have a coworker who's having a child who may be an option, but other than that i don't know of any other connections... i'd like to watch the children of teachers (like someone mentioned in another post on here) so i can keep my same schedule (i'm a teacher now) but where do i look? where do i start? how much do i charge? etc. daycares around here run around 1500-1700/month for full time care and nannies run 12-15/hr. what would be reasonable for a SAHM (who has multiple teaching certifications) to charge?

Re: watching other people's kids?
I think you must take into consideration that you will be watching your child with someone elses, so I am thinking, $280-325 weekly, but only because you say daycare costs are so high in your area. I really think that's outrageous. I am on LI and I would not pay that.
Are you planning on getting getting licensed? Holding liability insurance? Paying taxes on the money? Will your clients be able to claim your childcare on their taxes?
I would definately go by what people can afford in your area, because no matter what you are worth if noone can afford you, you are not going to make money.

no i agree - the prices are outrageous! part of the reason i'm thinking of doing this is because I can't afford care myself. it makes more sense for me to stay home. i have to do the math, but i'm thinking i can probably offer care at below the area's asking price and still be ok financially. plus i can offer other things like only being paid for the hours i watch the child etc.

Re: watching other people's kids?
I am a teacher too. I have considered doing the same thing but SEIT work has been my savior so I only have to work pt.
I think if you can up your $900, it may be a better deal for you. You may save money in gas and other work related expenses. I went back to a district this year and already spent a small fortune on clothing. Even if you get licensed you will have extra write-offs. Maybe ask your accountant about it. If you just want to babysit you can save a ton off the books.
Good luck. I hope it works for you.

i'm thinking about SEIT as well, but i'm not too sure about it... doesn't seem like a good match for me, but it's still in the running.
and yeah, if i can get anything more than the 900, it'd be a better deal. the sad thing is that's after daycare alone, not including travel expenses, clothing (as you mentioned. and i'd def have to buy it as i don't fit into anything anymore), and the inevitable fortune you spend on your students/classroom. ugh. it's actually kinda nauseating...
