Nassau communities pay highest water rates, face hike

Residents of Bellmore, Merrick and several neighboring communities pay the highest water rates on Long Island, according to their Nassau County legislator, and they're facing a 12 percent rate hike from the private water company that serves the area.
Nassau Legis. Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) was joined by Legis. David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) and other civic leaders Thursday outside the North Bellmore Fire Department - which said that, in addition, it pays the water company five times what neighboring East Meadow Fire District pays for rental and maintenance of fire hydrants. Pennsylvania-based Aqua is proposing a 27 percent rate hike for the fire districts it serves.
The legislators urged their constituents to attend a meeting Tuesday of the state Public Service Commission to protest the proposed rate hike. Aqua is seeking the commission's permission for the rate increases.
"We're already socked with the highest taxes, we don't need to be soaked with higher water rates," Denenberg said. "This private water company has a monopoly over a necessity."
He said the communities - including North Bellmore, North Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford, and parts of Levittown and Massapequa - should have a public water district like most of the rest of the Town of Hempstead.
He showed water bills indicating that in Merrick, for example, a homeowner this year has paid about three times as much for the same amount of water as a homeowner in East Meadow, which is served by a public water district.
"The only ones winning here are the [Aqua] stockholders," said Mejias, referring to the company's rising dividends which he said increased more than 5 percent in 18 of the past 19 years. "And they don't even live here . . . It's unfair to the ratepayer here."
In a statement, an Aqua spokeswoman said the rate hike will raise its revenue by $3.5 million and help fund $15 million worth of capital improvements to improve water quality and reliability to its 44,000 customers in Nassau County.

I live in massapequa, and our water is so cheap, its ridiculous
We pay about 15 dollars for 3 months, we feel so bad its so cheap we want to send them more money sometimes.

We pay about 15 dollars for 3 months, we feel so bad its so cheap we want to send them more money sometimes.
I live at the Hicksville/Levittown border and water is VERY cheap here. I still get mad when I see my neighboor's sprinkler system on when it's raining. What a waste!

I am in North Bellmore...last bill was $70 for 2 months! It is only DH and myself in the house. We do 1 dishwasher a week, 3 loads of clothes a week and quick showers. Also the sprinklers...but think that is way to much $$$$! Aqua charges TRIPLE what other Hempstead towns pay!

I know, our water bill is crazy. I already wrote a letter to the Public Service Commissioner asking him to not allow the rate hike.

Aqua suks.
And you know what pisses me off about them.. I have never seen a company send a paper bill and expect payment as soon as they do.
If I get my bill on August 12th, they expect payment by like the 28th. Whatever happened to 30 days?

We're in the Island Trees part of Levittown and the water is dirt cheap. We were looking at a house in North Wantagh and were told it's Aqua and that it's much more expense.

Our water bill is about $40every couple of months. I never though that was expensive. This summer it has been much less though since we haven used our sprinklers that often b/c of all the rain.
Honestly, I would rather people complain about the taxes in this area than the water bill.

My last water bill was $16.55 for 3 MONTHS! that was summer months too, from May - August. Much lower in the winter when we don't use sprinklers.
We have Jericho Water District.

Yes we have Aqua! Unless we get hit with a big bill at the end of the summer but our bill has been the same since the spring.

our bills normally run $40 in the winter, spring & fall...we just got our first summer bill with the sprinklers on & it was $154....We are in Wantagh
I do know parts of Levittown were Aqua bc my parents use to live there but they also had a well, so for sprinklers & stuff like that, we used the well. The Aqua water was ONLY for showers & dishes

Don't go by this. I just put my home address in & got the same message as you & we ARE serviced by Aqua. It is safe to say if you are buying in Levittown, you will have Aqua as your water supplier

Not true, because I live in Levittown, as do my in-laws, and neither of us have Aqua.
Ask your real estate agent to ask the buyers. They will tell you.

You can ask the real estate broker or call Town of Hempstead Water & see if they can tell you based on the address

I hope you don't. My mother, my brother and my cousin all live in Aqua district and I asked them about their bills after you posted this. The closest one to you was my mom, who lives alone. Her last bill was almost $90, and the one before that was $65. It's such a rip off!
