water coming up from floor in basement
I know its obviously from all the rain, but I'm wondering if anything can be done to fix this
it seems like the water in seeping under the foundation
no wet marks on the walls as if it were leaking in
its only one corner and it seems to be coming up from the floor
anyone know what could be done?

ditto. We have an unfinished basement and get this whenever it rains or we have a high tide, it has to do with your water table. We just put everything higher than the water level and call it a day
If you want a permanent fix, the cheaper one is a subpump or french drains. If you don't even want it to be damp down there - you are going to have to dig out the entire basement and basically build a "moat" around it to block the water, we were quoted $30K for this.
And so, we just have everything raised up down there and deal with it.

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
We have a partial French drain, and it helps, but it's far from perfect. We are getting water on the side of the house where there is no drain at the moment--not sure why the people who finished our basement didn't just dig a drain all the way around the house!

You can try to grade the dirt on the outside of your house so that it directs the water away from the foundation too. It may help.

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
One of the thrills of having a basement on LI
We get water also in ours when it rains really hard. We just live with it for now and we try not to keep anything on the floor for storage. Down the line when we want to finish the basement, we will look into something but right now we are not spending the $$.

We have the same problem here in NJ in my basement...
We now have 3 sump pumps and may eventually need to put in a french drain

good luck!
we have an entirely different source of water in the basement, the window wells are filling and water is coming in from the window frames, they each have a huge well with rock bottom, our home inspection said they were good but i guess with all this rain they are not that good

This happens to us sometimes too I just had to shut off my burner because there was water all around the bottom of the burner
Its rarely a major cause of concern except when its a torrential rain like this...

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
We had this the first year in our house. We only go down there once a week and weren't paying close attention to the cause.
Eventually we found out it was because of the gutters on the front of the house. The previous homeowner installed gutter guards but didn't clean the gutters out first. Once we removed the guard, cleaned out the gutters, and put an extender on the downspout in the same corner, our basement is much drier now.
I know many of these problems are not that simple, but you have to start somewhere, right?

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
One other question-do you have a drywell? We have one on the side of our house, and despite advice to the contrary from a couple basement waterproofing specialists, we always had a hunch the drywell couldn't handle heavy rainfall. So DH redid the gutter on that side of the house so the water gets dumped further away from the house, and we bypassed the drywell altogether. Only problem is, the opposite side of the basement flooded during the last two storms--not sure what's going on there.
Just one other thought--our water was creeping under the garage and coming in through the staircase in the basement--not against an outside wall at all, but near the drywell.

we had this too! but our window well was very low, only a few inches off the ground. and the window well is the lowest point. can you regrade to keep the water away? we had to put in a drain in the window well that goes to a sump pump. works great! no more flooding.

us too. First time in our house. Although I suspect it was a problem before due to the condition of the tiles. it was only a puddle in the corner of the house. We have a high water table in the smithtown area....

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
Do you live near the water, by chance? We live about 1000 feet from the water and have a basement in our 75 year old house and this happens to us when the water table comes up too high or we have heavy rains like we've been having. We had a company come and take a look at it. They were no help. Basically, you just need a pump. We have one and while it's far from a perfect cure, it pumps it out over a few days. It's strange because as fast as the water comes, it leaves just as fast and it's bone dry down there when there's no rain We just use it for storage down there and our washer and dryer, so it doesn't bother us that it happens. I'm sorry it's happening to you too!

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
we currently just had this same problem. we had a huge flood in our "FINISHED" basement because of all this wonderful rain. So pergo flooring and brand new carpets and Tenants all gone!! everyone is telling us it is ground water and i have no idea what this means and now they are saying we need french drains and we are getting quotes of 6000. Does this sound right. has anyone had french drains done. do they work will this help? I dont know what to do i feel like i am throwing my money out the door.

Re: water coming up from floor in basement
We have this problem as well. DH is planning to do the work himself.
Right now we just $uck it up and deal.
Don't have much down there anymore.
Since we probably won't live here forever, it also doesn't seem worth it to shell thousands and thousands of dollars into it.
Next time around I think we are going to look for a 2-floor high ranch type house WITHOUT a basement.
Like someone else said-----I don't think LI is meant to have basements in many places, especially close to the water.
