We finally signed up to bank cordblood
DH and I were certain that we wanted to do this, but we had a lot of trouble deciding on a company. For a few reasons, we went with Viacord.
It came down between Viacord and CBR. I still have a bad taste in my mouth about the aggressive marketing but I had to do my best to overlook that and to look at what the company was offering and their financial status and our gut feelings. It was not easy to compare companies because they each try to focus the consumer only on their strengths and they all seem to twist stats.
I will be receiving a kit and more paperwork in the mail. At that time, I will feel very relieved that my research is complete and that we are close to having this baby!!!!!!!
For anyone interested, the sales rep at CBR e-mailed me information about a current study at University of Fla. They are testing the use of cord blood stem cells (autolgous) on children with type I diabetes. The study is not related to any particular cord blood bank.

Congratulations! Ok I have a question, how much does it cost? What made you chose CBR over Viacord? Sorry that was two questions

I picked Viacord over CBR, actually.
Depending on your contract and payment plan, the cost is just under $2,000 initially and then $125 a year. There are $200 off coupons for Viacord available at Motherhood stores and there are similar coupons for CBR in magazines and online. There is some slight room for negotiation.
As far as my reasons---There were several and some of my reasons and DH's reasons were a little bit different but we came to the same conclusion. DH felt that Viacord was strongest financially and most likely to stay in business. I felt that CBR is equally strong and spends less.
My doctor's office carries Viacord only but does not really promote cord blood banking. My doctor explained to me that the group of doctors from the practice has met with reps from all of the major cord blood banks. Viacord was the only one that publishes the data about transplants and the only one that publishes their research for whoever may benefit. I wanted to check on that so I asked CBR about patient data, and they gave the same answer that my doctor felt was unsatisfactory. I think that I did feel a trust for my doctor's information and she was honest about the pros and cons of Viacord.
There were a few other reasons. At that last minute, I went to the AABB website to look up some of their standards regarding the bags and storage methods. Most of what Viacord claims to do is within those standards. CBR was pretty good in that regard also, but their comments about Viacord's methods were not true. I previously looked into other companies and those had marked deviations from the standard.
In some ways it came down to what we felt in our guts. We ruled out some companies rather easily, but between CBR and Viacord it was almost a toss-up!!

Thank you so much for the information, we still have to look in to it, but it is interesting to get a "real" opinion. My Dr also seems to go with Viacord, I'll ask him next appt.
