Wedding Money Dance

I was lurking over on LIW and I noticed a beautiful bride had this at her wedding. I have seen it done, but never realized the quantity of $$$ that was thrown around. They mentioned that in some customs, the DJ keeps it Chat Icon Which customs?

Can anyone fill me in on this?

Can anyone tell me why I didn't do this at my wedding?!? Chat Icon

Re: Wedding Money Dance

i didn't have one

but in latin america it's very popular. as far as i know, latin newlyweds keep the money. i had never heard of the dj getting the money

whenever i go to a latino wedding, i make sure and bring bobby pins, that way i can pin the money (folded line a fan) in the grooms hair like a bow.

yes, i'm a dork

i think its also popular in other areas of the country where guests tend to give actual gifts instead of cash.
DHs whole family is from waaay out in western PA, and they've done it at 2 of his cousins weddings so far. its kinda cute- they play like a polka song, and the guests wait in line for the chance to dance with the bride ( its usually just the bride, but for bigger wedding its bride and groom). when you get to the front of the line, the MOH is waiting there with a purse for you to put the cash in before you can dance with the bride.
unless its part of the culture, i think its kind of tacky to do it in this area, and ask guests to give you even more money when they've probably already put a big check in your card.... but its cute.

I didn't have one, but in the Ukrainian culture it is very traditional. Unfortunately, I didn't find out about this tradition until after our wedding.

We had a "dollar dance" because our parents insisted. It's more common in the Midwest where we got married, almost every wedding I've ever been to had one.

Typically, the newlyweds keep the money. We used it for our hotel suite that night.

Its a Greek Tradition, you throw money at the bride and groom for wealth and good luck in their marriage. The band gets to keep all the money and its something along the lines of the more money that hits the floor the longer the band plays.

I agree with this.

This is my only experience with the money dance. Usually the couple keeps the money to use for their honeymoon.

The wedding you are referring to is definitely Greek. They throw money in the air while dancing and that goes to the band/DJ.

There is also the "dollar dance" way where anyone wanting to dance with the bride or groom has to pin a dollar (or more) onto the bride or groom before they have their dance and that goes to the newlyweds.

I did not do it, but in many parts of the country it is a custom. I thought usually the bride and groom keep it.

I've never heard of this before. How much does each person give? Is this in addition to the card?

usually its just the close family members who throw the money. at this girls wedding from sat. night it was mostly her parents, siblings, the groom's parents and siblings--aunts, uncles, etc.

they were doing traditonal greek dancing and as they danced the family threw money at them.

Re: Wedding Money Dance

I had an American wedding with a Big Fat Greek Family. They threw money on us during a song and my family joined in.

Traditionally it goes to the band, if you have a bazooki band, but since I had a DJ I kept it. It was only during one dance and it was only like $60...nothing major.

Re: Wedding Money Dance

My brother and his wife had the money dance at their wedding. It was a small wedding in Florida and seemed like everyone accepted it. The money went to them for their honeymoon. My SIL's step dad gave her $5000 during the money dance so I am pretty sure that they had no intention of giving the money to a DJ. Chat Icon
