Re: Wedding Money Dance
I've only seen this once at my DH's cousin's wedding upstate. It was the "dollar dance" where people gave money to dance with the bride. I am pretty sure the couple kept the money.
So in a Greek wedding the band announces a money dance and then makes money off of it? Or am I not understanding correctly?

Re: Wedding Money Dance
It is done in my culture, not just for weddings but for all occassions that involves dancing. The celebrant/s always get to keep the money.
Also, the band is "sprayed" (that's the term we use) separately and get to keep that money.

Re: Wedding Money Dance...the meaning
Hey all.... it was my wedding that brought up this post. and Yes now im back from my hoenymoon and catching up.
OK in the Greek Culture and tradition it is not considered a money dance. All we did was traditional Greek dances. However people throw money as a sign to wish us ( the couple) wealth, prosperity, good luck etc. BUT We did not keep a dollar of all the moeny that was thrown. The band keeps it all as a tip and the more money they see hitting hte floor the longer they will play. they will not stop until the money does.u guys dont even want to know how much it was... u will fall out of ur seats.
typically it is close family members and such that shower u in money but whoever wants can join in on the fun. Noone is obligated to do anything but dance drink, eat and have a good time. it is not considered a gift to the bride and groom... since they do not keep the $.
I know in other cultures there are money dances that are caled money dance but the Greeks dont have anything like that.
I hope this helped clear things up for people :o)

Re: Wedding Money Dance
I'm from MI and this is a common thing there. It's referred to as the "Dollar Dance" and the bride and groom keep the money. In MI it's also customary to give a wedding gift, not money. If a gift of money is given, it's usually $100 or less.
