Weekly Menu Planners...
How do you go about planning out for the whole week? Do you plan and then shop? Or do you have staples that you always come back to? I normally go to the store every 2 weeks usually, buy the things I know we eat, and then come up w/ meals along the way w/ teh staples. But would love to plan ahead so I don't buy things that sometimes go to waste which are terrible!

Re: Weekly Menu Planners...
I go once a week for meat and produce. I review what I have on hand, search the circulars for good deals and then go from there.

Basically the same here. I start with what I may have on hand and meat in the freezer, then plan the rest of the days. I try to mix it up with the meat, a night for each -chicken/turkey, beef, pork, fish, pasta.

Re: Weekly Menu Planners...
What the others have said. I try to plan about 4 or 5 dinners a week, based on our schedule and assuming at least one night of leftovers. I decide what to make, often factoring in what I have on hand, what's on sale, and how long I will have to cook each night ( if I know I will have a late appointment on one night, I will plan a slow cooker meal for that night, for example). I look at cookbooks, online, and rely on old standbys when choosing a menu.
I do a weekly grocery shop, usually on mon or tues, and make a list based on what I need for my menu (plus other staples I need to fill in).
It's an investment of time upfront to plan and shop this way, but I think it saves time and money in the long run.

Re: Weekly Menu Planners...
I start with the weekly circular and a weekly meal plan. I have some ideas and then browse the sales and start creating the meals and shopping list. I then look at my staples and make sure I have everything I need for the meals I just set in place and add all of the special ingredients or staple replacements onto the shopping list for the meals I chose. I then go to the store with a specific list and try not to stray from that.

Weekly Menu Planners...
I start with the circulars to see what meat and produce is on sale. I typically check a few stores to see who has a few good deals on meats I would buy. Basic pantry and freezer stuff I just keep on hand and buy whenever they're on sale. My menu is based on whatever meat is on sale. I usually make my list and then develop the menu around the meat and produce on my list (or what I already have on hand). I tend to stick to recipes with familiar ingredients so I don't have to add much to the shopping list just for one specific meal. When I get home I usually jot the expiration dates on my calendar so that I make sure to use things up on time. This way I can sometimes stretch my shopping closer to two weeks.

These are great ideas. I'm going to give this a shot this upcoming week.
